Imagine that you want to sell something. Maybe, it is jewelry, clothing, or even a cool computer game. You already have your idea, but how do you market it to your audience? First, you need to think about branding. What will your audience enjoy? How can you tailor your advertising to them? Will trendy, artsy people want to buy from you? Or will your audience be different?
Knowing who will like your jewelry, clothing, or game is a key to selling it. There are many things to figure out when you create a marketing plan, but knowing your audience is the most important thing. You will need to know what these people like to do and what their age range is. Then, you can begin to create advertisements.
Jordin wants to sell her new jewelry, but she is fuzzy about how to market it. Listen as Brian gives her some ideas in today’s English lesson.

Jordin: So, I wanted to talk to you because I know you know about marketing things. And I am really struggling right now because I am trying to figure out what to do to market my new jewelry-selling business.
Brian: Oh, I heard about that.
Jordin: Yeah!
Brian: Oh, that’s great. Yeah, definitely. I can give you some tips. Do you know who your audience is?
Jordin: Uh… well…
Brian: Who you want to sell to. Who do you imagine wearing your jewelry… age range…?
Jordin: Really cool people.
Brian: Really cool… artsy?
Jordin: Yeah, definitely artsy… probably, like, on the edge of trendy but not too trendy because it’s, like, simple jewelry, you know?
Brian: Well definitely, because you want the style of your jewelry to also match the style of your branding, or vice versa.
Jordin: Yes, OK. So, number one, I need to figure out who I am selling to.
Brian: That is the key to marketing, really.
Jordin: That’s it?
Brian: That is the main key.
Jordin: OK.
Brian: Because once you know who you want to address, you can tailor all of your ads, your design, emails even, to those people.
Jordin: Great! Well, I will work on figuring that out because, right now, it’s a little fuzzy. But thank you so much!
Brian: Yeah, no problem.

Jordin is making jewelry that she wants to sell. But she is a bit fuzzy on how to market her jewelry. She asks Brian to help her. Brian is happy to give her some tips. He asks who she wants to sell her jewelry to. Jordin isn’t sure. She knows that artsy people will probably like her jewelry, but they shouldn’t be too trendy. After all, her jewelry is nice and simple.
Brian tells her that the style of her jewelry can help her create the style for her branding. The opposite is also true. And in order to create her branding, the first thing she needs to know is who her audience is. Brian tells her that this is the most important part of marketing. Jordin isn’t exactly sure who to sell to, so she will try to figure that out.
Did you ever sell something? What is your favorite brand and why?
