The conquest of Egypt by Alexander in 332 B.C,changed the status of the greeks from that mere settlers to that of the ruling class. Alexander's army was followed by steadily increasing influx of Greeks from all part of the Greek world seeking their fortune in the country thus newly opened up,and they speeded all over the country. Alexandria,which had been recently founded was entirely Greek in its architecture and population. In winter of the year 331B.C,and after building Alexandria,Alexander the Great ,accompanied by a great number of his friends and a part of hjis army,left Alexandria and marched towards Paraetonium(Known now as Marsa Matrouh).Then they turned southwardsto the old caravan road known as"sikket Al-Sultan".It was said that after few days ofmarch,their supply of water gave cut,and the whole caravan was terrified .But the divine protection intervened,and suddenly a heavy rain fell despite of the scarcity of the rain there.That rain served their lives. Then, after some days . a violent sandstorm blew,and they lost the track .Suddenly two birds were seen flying and Alexander gave his orders to follow the direction of the two birds,Saying that God Amun of Siwa had sent them the birds as a gracious reception for the caravan ,and by followin them the caravan reached Siwa
