For most of us, being stuck inside on a rainy day isn’t much fun. But people who love playing board games might feel differently. Board games have a bad reputation with some for being boring or stuffy. Once again, board game lovers would beg to differ. An especially heated game of Monopoly or Life can turn into a night of fun and intense competition. And for those who need a little extra push when it comes to playing a game of checkers or chess, there’s always the possibility of turning it into a drinking game. Hear Marni try to convince Jeff to play a board game with her.

Marni:  Jeff, I just got the newest version of Apples to Apples! Do you want to play it with me?

Jeff:  Apples to Apples? What’s that?

Marni:  It’s a board game, it’s so much fun. I love it. You just get a few people together, and…

Jeff:  Board game. Come on, what are we, 70?

Marni:  Well, no…

Jeff:  I’ll have all the time in the world at the old folks’ home to play board games. Right now, I’m…I don’t know. Let’s go out on the town. Something more exciting.

Marni:  But I love board games. I mean, don’t you ever like to get competitive, rolling the dice, and moving your piece along the board?

Jeff:  I guess. I mean, I don’t know. Not really.

Marni:  Nothing?

Jeff:  It just sounds like work to me.

Marni:  What?

Jeff:  Yeah, there’s nothing really fun about that.

Marni:  It’s fun work!

Jeff:  What about, you know, video games. There’s a little more action. It’s just so dull.

Marni:  But there’s so much more interaction with people when you’re playing a board game. You get to get competitive, you get to see how much you know, kinda get to show off a little bit.

Jeff:  That’s fine. Maybe you can find somebody else to play your board games with you.

Marni:  Oh, I will.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Marni wants to play a new board game she just got. But Jeff isn’t very interested. He thinks board games are for old people. He’d rather have a crazy night out on the town.

Marni likes to be competitive. She agrees that board games involve some work, but she thinks it’s fun work. She prefers board games to video games, because video games don’t involve any social interaction. But Jeff still isn’t interested. He tells Marni she should find someone else to play board games with her.

Who do you think is right, Marni or Jeff? Do you like playing board games? What about video games?

It's not about right or wrong, they have different interests.

I don't like board games, not because it's boring, just not my thing.
