Memory is a funny thing sometimes. Why do you remember some things so easily? Why are other things so easily forgotten? Why is it so easy to remember when you mess up? Or, when you get embarrassed? But then, it’s hard to remember simple things, like eating a sandwich for lunch. Sometimes, you might see someone and think they look familiar. Do you remember them from somewhere? You can’t quite place them, but they sure ring a bell.

When something rings a bell, this means that it reminds you of something, or something feels familiar. For example, maybe you invited your stressed out friend over for dinner. They were so stressed out, though, they forgot about your invitation. You might call your friend later and ask them if they are coming over for dinner. They might say, “Nope. I don’t actually remember you inviting me, but it does ring a bell.”

Andy is having a hard time remembering what he told Kelsey. Watch as it slowly rings a bell.

Andy_H:  Yeah, you know, I… I actually don’t remember saying yes to this.

Dominique:  Andy! It was, like, two days ago!

Andy_H:  Hmm. Nope. Doesn’t ring a bell.

Dominique:  The three of us went out to lunch. Kelsey asked us to go with her.

Andy_H:  Nope.

Dominique:  Kelsey said it was super important, and you said you’d go with her to support her. Remember?

Andy_H:  Nope. Still doesn’t ring a bell.

Dominique:  Are you joking?

Andy_H:  Wait, wait, wait! I’ve got it.

Dominique:  Finally.

Andy_H:  I was eating a sandwich, right? Yeah! Oh, and that was a good sandwich.

Dominique:  I don’t know. Maybe. Sure. You had a sandwich, and you said you’d support Kelsey, but instead, you almost made her late!

Andy_H:  Sorry, I just… It doesn’t ring a bell. Though, I do remember how many times my doorbell rang this morning.

Dominique:  Well, you weren’t answering your door, and Kelsey was super stressed out.

Andy_H:  You doing OK, Kelsey? Kelsey. Kelsey! Kelsey!!!

Kelsey:  Oh, hey, Andy!

Dominique:  Are you OK?

Kelsey:  It’s fine. I’m fine. It’s nothing. I’m just a little nervous. This is my first time going to an audition. What if I mess up? What if I get embarrassed? What if I FORGET EVERYTHING?!?!

Andy_H:  OHHHHHHH!!!

Kelsey:  What?!

Andy_H:  Audition. That does ring a bell.

Nestor:  OK, um… Kelsey? Is that you?

Kelsey:  Uh…

Andy_H:  It’s definitely her.

Nestor:  Right, well, come on in.

Kelsey:  What do I do?

Dominique:  You have to go in! You can do this, Kelsey!

Andy_H:  You’ve got this, Kelsey!!! You’ve got this! Go! Go! Go!

Andy and Dominique are sitting in a hallway. Kelsey has an audition, and they are there to support her. Andy tells Dominique he doesn’t remember agreeing to do this. Dominique says he agreed to it at lunch two days ago. Andy says that doesn’t ring a bell. Dominique tells him that Kelsey was nervous about her audition and asked them to come and support her.

Kelsey is pacing up and down the hallway. Andy gets her attention and asks her if she is OK. She says she is very nervous. This is her first audition, and she’s worried about messing up and forgetting everything. Andy finally remembers agreeing to come along and support her. The director comes out and invites Kelsey into the audition room. Dominique and Andy tell her she can do it. Go, Kelsey, go!

Have you recently forgotten something important? Did someone say or do something to help ring a bell?

Once my friend asked about when I pushed my friend off the stairs and almost broke her leg, and that really rang a bell.
