Every four years, obsessed fans watch the World Cup. Football may be one of the most popular sports in the world. However, in the United States, the word “football” has a different meaning than it does in most other countries. This is very confusing for a lot of diehard fans. In the US, football is a sport that people play by throwing a ball. Players must use their hands in this game.
The sport that most other countries call “football” is actually called soccer in the US. In soccer, players kick the ball, and they cannot use their hands. It doesn’t matter what you call it. People everywhere love this sport. Fans love to watch soccer matches and root for their home team. Sometimes, they even lose self-control when they chant for their favorite players.
Brian wants to take Sara to a soccer game, but she isn’t a fan. Will she go? Find out in today’s English lesson.

Brian: Sara, are you a fan of football?
Sara_R: Do you mean football, like soccer, or football…
Brian: Yeah, I’m sorry…
Sara_R: … like American football?
Brian: I mean like soccer.
Sara_R: No.
Brian: No?
Sara_R: But I could be.
Brian: Yeah, well, I was only asking because I have an extra ticket for a game, and I didn’t know if you wanted to come. I’m a raving, obsessed fan. I love the sport. I will see any team play. It doesn’t matter who they are. Of course, I have my favorites. When the World Cup comes around, I root for Japan every year. It’s really fun, I’ve got an extra ticket, and I thought you might want to join.
Sara_R: It would be fun to go with such a passionate diehard.
Brian: Yeah! It’s free!
Sara_R: Do you lose self-control, like just lose it at matches, like, “Ahhhhhhh”?
Brian: No, no, I don’t scream and shout. I will chant when the whole crowd’s chanting and singing tunes for the home team, but other than that, I just really enjoy watching the show.
Sara_R: OK, let’s go.
Brian: OK.

Brian is a raving soccer fan. He loves to watch any soccer game. He doesn’t care who is playing. He just loves the sport. His favorite team is Japan, and he cheers for them during every World Cup. Today, Brian has an extra ticket for a soccer game. He invites Sara to join him, but she isn’t a fan of soccer matches. However, she is interested in learning more about the sport.
Sara asks Brian what type of soccer fan he is. She wants to know if he can control himself at a soccer match. Although Brian is obsessed with soccer, he doesn’t like to scream and shout too much. Instead, he likes to chant for the home team and just enjoy watching the game. Sara thinks this sounds fun, and she agrees to go to the game with him.
Are you a diehard soccer fan? Who is your favorite soccer player?
