“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is the last in a trilogy of movies about J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous book, The Hobbit. These three films, along with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, have been filmmaker Peter Jackson’s greatest successes. There are few people in the world who don’t know about the small but brave hobbit, Bilbo.

In this final film, Bilbo must help his friend Thorin Oakenshield see that his wish for the Arkenstone, a gem of high value, is not as important as it seems. Will Bilbo be successful? Or will Thorin’s love of the Arkenstone win? If you’re a die-hard fan of Tolkien, you must see this movie.

Brian enjoys the “Hobbit” films, but Lily isn’t so sure. Can Brian change her opinion? Find out by reading today’s English lesson.

Brian:  Hey, Lily. You know what I’m excited for this Christmas?

Lily:  What?

Brian:  The “Hobbit” movie. The next one? “The Battle of the Five Armies.”

Lily:  I haven’t seen any of them.

Brian:  Oh, you haven’t? They’re so much fun.

Lily:  I don’t understand how they can take a children’s book and make a trilogy out of it. It’s just one teeny-tiny, little book.

Brian:  I know. It seems like they might be in it for the money. But I have to say, they’re really light-hearted. I’m not a die-hard fan of Lord of the Rings or Tolkien. I’m a fan, but I really just think they’re really fun.

Lily:  Mm-hm.

Brian:  The acting’s fine. It’s a lot of CGI, but…

Lily:  Well, Martin Freeman’s in it, and he’s really good. He’s from “Sherlock” and all those other movies. He’s so good.

Brian:  He’s fantastic. And “Sherlock”... Benedict Cumberbatch… does the voice of the dragon, which is really cool, too.

Lily:  Reunited! It’s awesome!

Brian:  I know. But anyway, you should check out the other ones, and then maybe give this last one a chance.

Lily:  Maybe.

Brian is excited to see the last film in the “Hobbit” trilogy. He’s planning to see “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” on Christmas, and he wonders if Lily is planning to go as well. To Brian, all of the “Hobbit” movies are fun and enjoyable. He also likes the acting of Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Lily has never seen any of the “Hobbit” movies, and it sounds like this one will be no different. She loves the actors, too, but Lily thinks that it’s a little strange that the filmmakers took one book and made it into three movies. Brian thinks they’re just in it for the money, and it sounds like Lily agrees.

Are you going to see “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies?” Why or why not?

Bow To Sir Peter Jackson. If this movie does not win an Oscar this year, then Hollywood has got some issues.
