Taking a train, riding the bus or subway, driving a car, walking, and cycling are the transportation options that people in land-locked areas or areas with a lot of bridges have. However, for people that live in areas surrounded by water, another option may exist: ferries! A ferry is a large boat, or vessel, that transports people and maybe even their cars or bicycles across short distances in the water.

For those people who rarely get to take a ferry, it may be an exciting adventure to get on board the large vessel and sail majestically down the sea, river, or lake. On the other hand, for those people who rely on ferries for their daily transportation, taking the ferry may lose its charm after a while. For some people though, taking a ferry will never get old. What do you think about taking the ferry? Join Sara and Marni’s discussion on taking the ferry in this English lesson.

Marni:  Sara, the other day I had to take a ferry to where I was going, and it was so amazing. I haven’t taken a ferry in so long. It was great.

Sara:  What did you like about it?

Marni:  Well, first of all you get to drive on this giant vessel. And then you’re moving slowly, cause I get kinda seasick, so you’re moving super slowly, and it was just very majestic and, I don’t know, it was a lot of fun.

Sara:  I think it’s really cool that some people actually use ferries to commute to work.

Marni:  Wow. Yeah, I hadn’t thought about it that way. I think if you were commuting it might lose it’s charm, and it’s kinda slow, so it might feel like it takes awhile, but if you’re just going for a scenic ride, it’s pretty majestic.

Sara:  I guess it could get kind of old, but you know, you get dressed for work, and you walk out to the end of the dock, so you’re waiting along the river, or the body of water for the ferry to come. It just seems like a really lovely way to start your day.

Marni:  I hadn’t really thought about it that way. You’re right. It does sound kinda nice. Maybe I’ll try to get a job where I have to take a ferry to work.

Marni recently took a ferry for the first time in awhile. She loved being out on the water in a giant vessel. She’s glad that ferries move slowly, because she gets seasick.

Sara likes ferries, too. She thinks it would be very cool to commute to work on a ferry. It might get old just like all forms of transportation, but it might not. It might just be a lovely experience every day.

Marni thinks that’s such a great idea that she might try to get a new job where she can take a ferry to work.

Have you ever taken a ferry? Do you like ferries? How do you commute to work?

I doesn’t take me too much to commute to work, but I’m horrified at the idea if, in case, I find a new job and it will be far far away that it takes me to get there about an hours or so. I just see how people stressed out from much commuting, how tired they’re getting home, how back pain is bothering them and how they don’t want to do anything just to lie down and be left alone. With such a schedule and attitude to life, there might be happy marriages effected as the spouses spends less time with each other. So, I’m happy it takes me only 10 min to get to my work and after work I ‘m not deadly tired and ready for new challenges like swimming, dancing, cooking, walking and etc.

I like ferries, ships but for the leaisure time.

Since my hometown is in innerland and there are a lot of grassland and few rivers or lakes, I didn’t have the oppotunity to take a ferry before. Now I study in Tianjin, which is a city near Bohai Sea,but it is a harbor actually and there is no beach here.In usual people here take their cars to somewhere or go to work by bus.I like to go to school by bike, bus and subway. If I’m in hurry I will take a taxi.Occasionally you can find the boats in this city, and they are on the lakes of parks.

Last year I went to travel to Beidaihe with my classmates. On the beach we met a few fishermen and rent a ferry from them. Then we took the ferry on the sea.It is a very cool experience and I could feel the sea breeze.

here in india , ferry is not a tranportation option and there is not such kind of water in metro city, well if we commute in our village then definetly we wll get a chance to commute with large giant vessel, and feel glad , or may be sessick  , and if we live for a long time then may be we feel its a old transportation option. but currently i am living near body of water but it is land locked , but here is no ferry running back and forth, so we need to rely on other transportation options.

Since there are many islands around of my city with body of water, I got on a ferry several times. Getting in the vessel is charming and enjoyable because you can get on it with your car and stay there for several hours. Although it is rare , some people get seasick when stay there which is so upsetting. If you want to commute on the ferry all the time, it lose its charm. It is awsome to get it occasionally.

Talking about sea stuffs attract me…

For me I can say; I have tried most kind of transportations , so let me put down my opinion!!

On crowded roads from mini bus to whatever can –even Ferrari or Mercedes- won’t work or help you arrive easily on time and without feeling bore ,furthermore the sound and air pollution, so cycling is the solution for more benefits(specially for under ages… hehe).

Now imagine with me how the atmosphere of sea transportation stuffs will be to commute you(put side seasick); fresh air, less sound, in addition to the attractive view

(wide space open its arms to you and wish you a happy day).

When the day come to see every school has its ferry to commute students back and forth? What about yacht… HEEEE

Yes, I’ve been on a ferry once and it was a horrible experience. Although it was going so slow I got super seasick, that I had to go to the toilet several times. Also, I had to stay seated the whole trip, because as soon as I stand up I feel sick. Well, I’ve just remembered that I’ve been on one last year,it was a field trip to a US ferry boat to show us the weapons they use, etc. Even though the ferry wasn’t moving I got a bit dizzy, because when you concentrate on the boat’s slow movement and it swaying left and right slowly, it can actually have a bad effect on you, lol! So, overall I dislike all water vehicles!

Way back in time while I  was visiting friends in Vancouver  I  had to take a ferry to cross me to Burnaby . It was a pleasant and new experience  for me , I guess that most of the passengers were people  that  use this kind of transportation  to commute back and forth to work.

In the south of my country, there is a region called te marshland. There the ferry is the only way to back and forth. The first boat is built there. It is a unique way of life which is built over the body of water.

I’ve taken a ferry once maybe twice but it was just a trip. I have no possibility to get to work by ferry,so I get there only by car. However I think I wouldn’t like to travel like that everyday, only from time to time to change something. I like to drive a car, it gives me pleasure, although sometimes it can be stressful. But I know there are people who prefer travel by ferry because it is quit, easy and they can read something and etc. It could be nicer than taking a train or the bus but only for those who do not have sea sickness ( on the other hand they can have travel sickness :P ).

Why you don’t use online dictionary to look your words up and find the meanings, it’s so easier than waiting for someone’s reply ;) Kinda: kind of – Cool: great, good (in informal)

Ferries can save time and fuel. You don’t have to drive a long detour by using a ferry.
We took different ferries, but only during vacations. The biggest (by size) car ferry (“Color Magic”) for instance or – my best ferry experience – the Key West Express Ferry. A high speed catamaran. Both are very impressive.
It doesn’t matter if we take a slowly or fast ferry – my wife always gets seasick :)
