Hey Friends!
When I lived in France and wanted to ask my French friends to do something, I was never certain if I was asking them in the usual way. It can be very confusing to learn how friends communicate with each other… Especially when you are learning these customs using a culture and language that are not your own.
In this lesson, listen as John invites his friend Jason to go to a basketball game!

John:  Hey I have an extra ticket to the Blazer[/def] game tonight.

Jason:  Really? Oh, are you inviting me?

John:  Yeah, I am.

Jason:  Oh, I’d love to go.

John:  You have free time?

Jason:  Yeah, yeah, I always have free time.

John:  Have you been to any of the games yet this year?

Jason:  I haven’t been to a Blazer game in like five years.

John:  Really?

Jason:  Yeah.

John:  Well, I think they’re playing Washington tonight so Jordan[/def] should be there.

Jason:  Oh! All right! He’s made quite a comeback.

John:  Yeah.

Jason:  Yeah. All right.

John:  So the game’s at, uh, it’s at seven…

Jason:  Uh huh.

John:  So, my car’s in the shop. Can you pick me up?

Jason:  Is that why you invited me ‘cause I have a car?

John:  Yeah.

Jason:  Okay. Yeah I’ll pick you up. I’ll pick you up at, uh, at six o’clock. You want to get there early.

John:  Perfect.

Jason:  Get some hot dogs.

John:  Perfect.

Jason:  Okay, you buy the hot dogs.

John:  Okay.

Jason:  All right.

Discussion

There are two important things to pay attention to in this lesson. First of all, Jason has a tendency to talk over John when he gets excited. You can hear him do this several times during the beginning of the conversation, and when John says that Michael Jordan will be playing in the Basketball game.
The second thing to notice is how Jason’s tone of voice changes when John asks him to drive. He teases John, saying that the only reason John is inviting him to the basketball game is because he has a car. Can you hear the difference in his voice?
I hope this lesson helps you! If you would like to share a story or have a question for us please come to the Life Goes On message board!
Have a Great Week!!
