When most people are done with work, they clock out, go home, and don’t think about work until the next morning. But some jobs sort of follow you home. Police officers, for instance, have such an intense job that it can be hard to stop thinking like a police officer when the work day is over.

When you think of addiction, you usually think of drugs, but people can also be addicted to work. When she was working undercover, Ella was working anytime she hung out with Mason. Will she be able to stop acting like a cop now that she and Mason are going to be friends? Watch as Ella treats Mason’s bedroom like a a crime scene.

Mason:  Yeah, I just need to grab a jacket because it’s getting kind of chilly out, even though it’s summertime already, but what are you gonna do?

Ella:  Yeah, totally. It’s…

Mason:  I don’t know, what do you think? Does this one look good?

Ella:  Yeah, that looks great.

Mason:  What are you, uh…What’s going on? You checking out my stuff?

Ella:  Just stretching.

Mason:  Stretching? Yeah, stretching in my drawers?

Ella:  Yeah.

Mason:  Looking for illicit material?

Ella:  Maybe, a little.

Mason:  You’re not gonna find anything. You gotta chill out.

Ella:  I feel like I’m on duty all the time, so I just…

Mason:  Have a seat. Have a seat. Have a seat. You are a workaholic. I think it’s pretty clear.

Ella:  No.

Mason:  No, no, no. I think it’s pretty clear.

Ella:  I think that’s an overexaggeration is what that is.

Mason:  You gotta learn that it’s OK to be off duty sometimes. You gotta punch the card. You know, go off the clock.

Ella:  It’s just so hard. My mindset is always in work. Especially being undercover, you’re just always in this other state of mind.

Mason:  I mean, I can understand that. I can understand. But we’re cool, right? I don’t want to feel like I gotta watch my back all the time because I got some cop and I can’t loosen up, ‘cause then I’m gonna be all tight all the time and you’re gonna be up tight.

Ella:  That’s true. I don’t want you to be weird.

Mason:  It’s a bad situation.

Ella:  It’s uncomfortable.

Mason:  OK. Can we, like go off the clock? No more workaholic when we’re hanging out?

Ella:  I’ll try.

Mason:  Alright.

Ella:  I promise. I promise.

Mason:  Seriously, I need that jacket though. Alright, let’s go.

Ella:  Let’s go.

When Mason runs up to his room to get a jacket, Ella looks out his window and starts to check in his drawers. When Mason asks her about it, she lies and says she’s stretching. But he can tell she’s searching his room for something illegal.

Mason accuses Ella of being addicted to work. At first she disagrees, but eventually she admits that she never feels off duty. She agrees to try harder to relax when she’s hanging out with her friends.

Is it easy for you to stop thinking about work when you’re at home or with your friends?

I think it's really difficult to stop thinking about my job, cause I'm an English teacher so, everytime I listen to music, watch a movie, read or talk to my friends something always reminds me my students and I have to take notes of things I can take to class… Some friends hate that, they usually say I have to take easy and have fun, others like to talk about how I work with my students since we're almost the same age and stuff like that …

Like other “aholics,” the workaholic has an unhealthy addiction. In this case, the addiction is for work, career, or a belief that they are “the only one who can do the job right.” Without this consuming focus, the workaholic may believe he’s a failure or has little worth. Often, this is a sign of insecurity or having priorities out of order.

Workaholics will spend most of their lives at work or taking work home with them. They will often have little time for personal lives—family, hobbies, or relaxation. Having a balance is not just a preferable desire; it is needed for overall mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health
