Colombia

Today (July 20th) is Independence Day in my adopted home, Colombia.

In addition to the normal celebrations (many of which started earlier in the week) millions of Colombians here and around the world will be marching for peace, demanding the release of more than 700 prisoners still held by FARC

30,000 people rallied in support of the hostages yesterday in Madrid.

What's wrong with Colombia?I strive for following the news regarding Colombia. As far as I'm concerned, there is hard friction between government and gerillas.By all account, the gerillas control almost the half of Colombia.İf I am mistaken, please correct it.Last week a French soldier, who was a woman, was rescued with a successful operation. She is said that she was captured 17 years ago.I wish for your country to live in peace and happiness.

Dignified. The guerrillas no longer hold as much territory as they did in the past, and most areas of the country are generally safe. Tourism and business investment is increasing and prospects are good. FARC and other groups, including right wing paramilitaries and drug gangs have almost no support among the populace.

The operation a couple weeks ago was to rescue 15 of the hostages, including 4 of the most valuable ones: 3 Americans and Ingrid Betancourt a writer and politician who was running for president when she was kidnapped in 2002. Betancourt is a dual citizen of Colombia and France.

Lilimira, the more than 700 prisoners are not in jail. They are hostages who have been kidnapped by FARC, a guerilla group. FARC often uses kidnapping to raise money from ransoms or to exchange these prisoners for members of the guerilla group who are in prison. FARC is considered a terrorist group by the governments of Colomba, the US, and others.

I invite any Colombian members to give us their views on the conflict or tell us about their country. Please let me know if any of my info is wrong.

One more picture. It has nothing to do with marches, but it's nice anyway  Laughing
