Hi, thereI got wind ofSt. Patrick’s Day yesterday. I am just curiouswhat is it, where it stems from, how peoplecelebrate it? Does it have to do with Shamrock?I came by this word several times these days aswell.

I have one more question about theslang: tongue-in-cheek
Would you pleaseexplain this to me?

Tongue-in-cheek is aninteresting phrase. I’ve often wondered what thehistory is behind it. Unfortunately, aftersearching the web, I still don’t know. But, Ican tell you what it means: When you saysomething with your tongue-in-cheek, you are notserious about what you are saying. You might bejoking, or you might be trying to fool the personyou are talking to, but either way you are beinginsincere.

For example, I might say to a friendwho knows that I hate broccoli: “I loved thatbroccoli your mom cooked last night. It was thebest I’ve ever had. I hope she invites me overfor dinner again next week.”

Does that makesense?

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was an archbishop of roman catholic church. March 17th is the day. And being Irish, the people are jovial, quick to anger, quick to make friends, have a binge and dance the devil, on the streets of new york,  where many irish people migrated when there was a famine in Ireland,  as the potatoes they cultivated turned black and rotten due to an unknown virus then.
