When I Remember Your Promise....

BECAUSE I PROMISE YOU….

There are times 'dear….',
when ummi won't be able to be there for you,
to talk or play with you,
to wipe your tears
nor end your fears ...

There might be times
ummi just won't be able to be here for you,
not that I don't want to, though I hope I'll always be able to ...
This is the truth, it hurts to admit, but simply true,
though my heart will always long for you,
and forever always I shall love you ...

Because ummi is just like 'little' you,
needy and dependent in a lot of ways too,
I might fell sick or there's just other chores to do,
though always and always,
I'll try to give my best to you,
and for you ...

Love is, 'little sweetheart',
mostly felt by the heart,
not always seen, heard or touched ...
Know that my love will always remain in your memory,
though my cuddles and kisses are absent
from your senses to perceive ...

But don't worry little darling,
as I promise you,
Allah ar-rahman ar-raheem will
always be there for you,
He doesn't need any sleep,
nor will he be too busy for you,
He'll never fell ill,
or forget to care for you ...

He exists and lives forever too,
He's always watchful of everything you do,
to keep you safe and healthy too,
He's the best to rely on,
won't ever let you down,
so don't worry little sweetheart,
because I promise you,
He'll keep you company though the world stays busy,
He'll cure your sickness and makes you feel happy,
He even understands you better than me,
He'll help you go through the days,
with or without me ...

IT’S NOT OBLIGATION FOR MUSLIM WOMEN TO COVER HER FACE

I want to share this article to all people, especially muslims who want to get right comprehension about hijab in Islam....inshaAllah. This is really really great n useful article n have deep comprehension about hijab in Islam I ever read.

I post this blog is inspired by Novita posting in

BUT now, this article is still in Indonesian version.....

I wish I can translate whole this article in English..... BUT I'm afraid if I make mistakes in it, coz it's related with laws in Islam. I hopefully there is people who understand in Indonesia n fluent inE nglish oneday can translate this article.

SO, now this article espesially is just to people who understand in Indonesian.

Nothing at all......

At least, the beginning of this article is like below.......

IT’S NOT OBLIGATION FOR MUSLIM WOMEN TO COVER HER FACE

Statement that women in Islam hav to use hijab to cover all their face, except their eyes can be categorized as Islamic opinion. This opinion has been said by a part of imam mujtahid (certain people who suitable to determine laws for something that not explained clearly in Qur’an or hadits, BUT still use Qur’an n Hadist as his standart) from various existing mazhab (schools in Islam). In other way, statement that hijab don’t be obligatoion for women in Islam - so a muslim woman doesn’t need to cover all her face , cause indeed face is not aurat (genital-part of human that should be covered) – is also Islamic opinion. This last opinion is also said by a part of mujtahid promoter from various mazhab. This matter is one of urgent matter in interaction sytem between man n woman.

Therefore, effort to adopt what ever opinion between both of opinions above will influence type of Islamic life. Hence, of course it is need explanation about dalil-dalil syari’at (argumentations of Islam laws) that related with this matter completely. The way to reach this goal is with learn n effort to get understanding about that (dalil-dalil) and apply it on the its matter. With it, muslims can adopt opinion that has strongest arguments. And if daulah Islamiyah (Islam country) is exist, it can adopt opinion that most valid according to strongnest or validity of that argument (dalil).

Indeed it’s true, controversion about this topic has appear since half of century ago. A lot of controversion is emergented by kolonialism of non believer. They spread it to the soul of people that cheated by West n people who attracted so far with culture n ideas of West in determine their life direction. They that have influenced by West, then they effort to against Islam with change the view direction of muslims. Beside it, they make propagate idea of hijab and prohibition for hijab. This matter should be faced by thoughful people that have deep understanding in Islam about it, BUT Unfortunately, it’s faced by writers of book, poets, intelectual that don’t too underatand about that matter, even they support opinions that surely behind it has been formed by West. So by that, their ideas become topic in a lot of conversations n discutions, although that ideas is from West that intentionaly is given to against Islam, destroy muslims, n spread doubtful in muslim’s mind toward their own religion, Islam.

Indeed it’s true that controvertion like that ever appear n its effect still can we feel until now. However, study about it have not clear n have not reach discusion according to syariat (Islam laws) or involved with aspect of interaction between man n woman. Whereas study about this is include study about laws of Islam that studied by mujtahid based on dalil or subhah dalil (something that similar or categorized as dalil). It’s not just study about opinions of writers of book, payment people, stupid cheated people or propagator that always follow West.

WANITA MUSLIMAH TIDAK WAJIB MENUTUP WAJAH

Pernyataan bahwa wanita dalam Islam wajib mengenakan hijab untuk menutupi seluruh wajahnya, kecuali kedua matanya dapat dikategorikan sebagai pendapat yang Islami. Pendapat tersebut telah dikemukakan oleh sebagian imam mujtahid dari berbagai mazhab yang ada. Sebaliknya, pernyataan bahwa hijab tidak diwajibkan atas wanita dalam Islam –sehingga seorang muslimah tidak perlu menutupi wajahnya secara penuh karena wajah memang bukan aurat– juga merupakan pendapat yang Islami. Pendapat yang terakhir ini juga dikemukakan oleh sebagian pemuka mujtahid dari berbagai mazhab. Persoalan ini merupakan salah satu persoalan penting dalam sistem interaksi antara pria dan wanita.

Sementara itu, upaya untuk mengadopsi pendapat manapun di antara kedua pendapat di atas akan mempengaruhi corak kehidupan Islam. Untuk itu, tentu perlu dikemukakan dalil-dalil syariat yang terkait dengan persoalan ini secara menyeluruh. Caranya adalah dengan mempelajari dan mengkaji dalil-dalil tersebut serta menerapkannya pada persoalannya. Dengan itu, kaum muslim dapat mengadopsi pendapat yang paling kuat dalilnya, dan Daulah Islamiyah dapat mengadopsi pendapat yang paling valid dengan didasarkan pada kekuatan dalilnya.

Memang benar, wacana (perdebatan) di seputar wanita ini telah muncul sejak setengah abad yang lalu. Perdebatan tersebut banyak dipicu oleh kaum kolonialis kafir dan dihembuskan ke dalam jiwa orang-orang yang tertipu oleh Barat serta orang-orang yang haus dengan kebudayaan dan cara pandang Barat dalam menentukan arah hidupnya. Mereka yang telah ter-barat-kan ini selanjutnya berusaha untuk memalingkan Islam dengan melontarkan pendapat-pendapat yang bertentangan dengan Islam; berupaya untuk memutarbalikkan arah pandangan kaum muslim; serta berusaha untuk memproragandakan gagasan tentang hijab dan larangan berhijab. Alih-alih dihadapi oleh para ulama pemikir, mereka malah dihadapi oleh para pengarang buku, para sastrawan, dan para intelektual yang berpikiran jumud yang justru memperkuat pendapat-pendapat mereka yang memang telah dibentuk oleh Barat. Gagasan-gagasan mereka lantas dijadikan sebagai topik perbincangan dan pengkajian, meskipun gagasan-gagasan tersebut bersumber dari Barat yang sengaja dilontarkan untuk menyerang Islam, merusak kaum muslim, serta menyebarluaskan skeptisisme (keragu-raguan) dalam diri kaum muslim terhadap agama mereka.

Memang benar, perdebatan semacam ini pernah muncul dan pengaruhnya masih terasa hingga kini. Akan tetapi, pembahasannya tidak sampai matang, serta tidak sampai pada suatu level pengkajian yang didasarkan pada syariat ataupun dikaitkan dengan aspek interaksi pria-wanita. Padahal, pengkajian semacam ini termasuk ke dalam pembahasan hukum-hukum syariat yang digali oleh para mujtahid yang disandarkan pada dalil atau syubhah dalil (sesuatu yang mirip atau terkategori dalil); bukan termasuk ke dalam pengkajian pendapat para pengarang buku, orang-orang upahan, orang-orang bodoh yang tertipu, atau para propagandis yang haus akan kebudayaan Barat. Dengan kata lain, yang dijadikan topik pengkajian dan bahan diskusi dalam masalah syariat adalah pendapat para mujtahid yang digali dari sejumlah dalil syariat. Di samping itu, topik pengkajian dan bahan diskusi dalam masalah ini, juga terkait dengan berbagai pendapat para ahli fikih dan para syaikh yang senantiasa fanatik terhadap hijab sehingga dapat menyingkirkan kesamaran dalam diri mereka.

Oleh karena itulah, kami akan memaparkan sejumlah pendapat para mujtahid disertai dengan dalil-dalilnya, sehingga akan tampak pendapat yang dinilai paling layak. Siapa saja yang telah menemukan pendapat yang dianggap paling layak, wajib untuk mengamalkan pendapat tersebut serta merealisasikannya.

Kalangan yang mewajibkan wanita muslimah untuk mengenakan hijab atas wajah menyatakan bahwa, aurat wanita meliputi seluruh anggota tubuh. Pengecualian wajah dan kedua telapak tangan hanya berlaku dalam shalat saja. Di luar waktu shalat, menurut mereka, seluruh anggota tubuh wanita adalah aurat. Pendapat mereka disandarkan pada Al Quran dan Sunnah Nabi saw..

Dari Al Quran, mereka mengutip firman Allah swt., sebagai berikut, "Apabila kamu meminta sesuatu (keperluan) kepada mereka (isteri- isteri Nabi), Maka mintalah dari belakang tabir (hijab)” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 53).

Ayat ini menerangkan dengan jelas bahwa hijab memang diwajibkan atas wanita. Allah swt. juga berfirman, “Hai nabi, katakanlah kepada isteri-isterimu, anak-anak perempuanmu dan isteri-isteri orang mukmin: ‘Hendaklah mereka mengulurkan jilbabnya ke seluruh tubuh mereka’. yang demikian itu supaya mereka lebih mudah untuk dikenal, Karena itu mereka tidak diganggu” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 59).

Mereka berpendapat bahwa, kalimat yudnina ‘alayhinna min jalabibihinna bermakna mengulurkan hijab atas seluruh tubuh mereka, termasuk wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Mereka berpendapat bahwa para wanita di masa permulaan Islam masih mempraktikkan adat kebiasaan jahiliah, yaitu terbiasa mengenakan pakaian rumah dan memakai kerudung, sehingga tidak ada perbedaan antara wanita merdeka dengan wanita hamba sahaya (budak). Para pemuda iseng di jalanan sering mengganggu para budak wanita yang keluar malam hendak membuang hajat di bawah pohon atau tempat-tempat yang biasa mereka gunakan. Mungkin saja, mereka juga mengganggu para wanita merdeka yang mereka sangka sebagai budak-budak wanita. Mereka sering mengatakan, “Saya kira dia budak”.

Setelah itu, turunlah perintah kepada para wanita (merdeka) untuk membedakan diri dengan para wanita hamba sahaya dengan cara mengenakan baju dan milhafah (sejenis kain panjang (abaya)) serta penutup kepala dan wajah (kerudung). Dengan pakaian semacam ini, mereka akan tampak lebih terhormat dan tidak menjadi obyek gangguan dari mereka yang memiliki sifat tamak. Dengan pakaian semacam ini pula, mereka akan lebih dikenal sehingga para lelaki iseng tidak mengganggu mereka atau berbuat sesuatu yang dibenci oleh mereka.

Di antara mereka, ada yang mengatakan bahwa kalimat adna an yu’rafna pada ayat di atas diketahui melalui kata la yang mahdzufah (dihilangkan) yang bermakna agar mereka tidak diketahui cantik atau tidaknya sehingga mereka tidak diganggu. Allah swt. berfirman, “Dan hendaklah kamu tetap di rumahmu dan janganlah kamu berhias dan bertingkah laku seperti orang-orang Jahiliyah yang dahulu” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 33).

Sementara itu, yang bersumber dari Sunnah Nabi saw., mereka mengutip riwayat bahwa Nabi saw. telah bersabda, “Wanita itu adalah aurat.”

“Apabila telah ada seorang mukatib (yang hendak memerdekakan budak) bagi salah seorang budak wanita dan ia memiliki (harta) untuk membayarnya, hendaklah budak wanita yang akan dimerdekakan itu dihijab dari (pandangan) calon tuannya.”

Selain itu Ummu Salamah pernah menuturkan riwayat sebagai berikut, “Aku pernah duduk di sisi Nabi saw. bersama Hafshah. Kemudian datanglah Ummi Maktum meminta izin. Setelah itu, Nabi saw. bersabda, ‘Kenakanlah hijab di hadapannya.’ Aku berkata, ‘Ya Rasulullah sesungguhnya dia itu buta, tidak bisa melihat,’ beliau lantas bersabda, ‘Apakah kalian berdua juga buta dan tidak melihatnya?’”

Ada juga riwayat yang menyebutkan demikian, “Suatu ketika, Fadhl Ibn Abbas membonceng Nabi saw.. Tiba-tiba, datanglah seorang wanita bernama Khats’amiyah hendak meminta pendapat. Fadhl lantas memandang wanita tersebut dan wanita itupun memandangnya. Karena itu, Rasulullah kemudian memalingkan wajah Fadhl dari wanita itu” (HR. Abu Dawud).

Jarir ibn Abdillah juga menuturkan, “Aku pernah bertanya kepada Rasulullah saw. tentang pandangan yang tiba-tiba (tidak sengaja). Rasulullah kemudian memerintahkan kepadaku untuk memalingkan pandanganku.”

Ali r.a. menuturkan bahwa Rasulullah saw. juga pernah bersabda kepadanya demikian, “Janganlah engkau mengikuti pandangan pertama dengan pandangan berikutnya. Pandangan pertama adalah untukmu, sedangkan pandangan berikutnya bukan untukmu.”

Dalil-dalil di atas dilontarkan oleh kalangan yang berpendapat bahwa wanita wajib untuk mengenakan hijab dan bahwa seluruh tubuh wanita adalah aurat. Seluruh dalil yang dijadikan sandaran mereka tersebut pada dasarnya tidak relevan dengan permasalahan ini. Seluruh dalil di atas tidak berkaitan dengan topik ini. Firman Allah swt. yang berbunyi, “waqarna fi buyutikunna” (hendaklah kalian tetap di rumah kalian) (Q.S. Al Ahzab: 33), tidak ada hubungannya sama sekali dengan kaum muslimah secara keseluruhan. Kedua ayat di atas (maksudnya ayat ke-33 dan sebelumnya ayat ke-32) tersebut dikhususkan bagi istri-istri Rasulullah saw.. Makna kedua ayat tersebut sangat jelas jika dibaca secara keseluruhan. Keduanya satu sama lain saling berkaitan baik dari segi lafal maupun maknanya.

Sementara itu, Allah swt. berfirman, “Hai orang-orang yang beriman, janganlah kamu memasuki rumah-rumah nabi kecuali bila kamu diizinkan untuk makan dengan tidak menunggu-nunggu waktu masak (makanannya), tetapi jika kamu diundang maka masuklah dan bila kamu selesai makan, keluarlah kamu tanpa asyik memperpanjang percakapan. Sesungguhnya yang demikian itu akan mengganggu Nabi lalu Nabi malu kepadamu (untuk menyuruh kamu keluar), dan Allah tidak malu (menerangkan) yang benar. Apabila kamu meminta sesuatu (keperluan) kepada mereka (isteri-isteri Nabi), maka mintalah dari belakang tabir. Cara yang demikian itu lebih suci bagi hatimu dan hati mereka. Dan tidak boleh kamu menyakiti (hati) Rasulullah dan tidak (pula) mengawini isteri-isterinya selama-lamanya sesudah ia wafat. Sesungguhnya perbuatan itu adalah amat besar (dosanya) di sisi Allah” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 53).

Ayat ini terkait dengan istri-istri Nabi dan khusus ditujukan kepada mereka; tidak ada hubungannya dengan kaum muslimah atau wanita manapun selain istri-istri Nabi saw.. Yang memperkuat bahwa ayat ini khusus ditujukan bagi istri-istri Rasulullah saw. adalah hadits yang diriwayatkan dari Aisyah r.a. ketika beliau bertutur demikian, “Saya sedang makan bersama Nabi saw. dengan memakan jenis makanan dari kurma dalam sebuah mangkuk, tiba-tiba datanglah Umar. Ia lalu dipanggil oleh Nabi saw. untuk makan bersama-sama hingga jari-jemarinya menyentuh jemariku. Umar lantas berkata, ‘Ah seandainya saja ditaati, niscaya anda tidak akan dipandang oleh mata.’ Setelah itu, turunlah ayat mengenai hijab.”

Umar r.a. juga bertutur demikian, “Aku berkata, ‘Ya Rasulullah, orang-orang yang masuk secara bergiliran (ke rumah Nabi saw.) ada yang baik dan ada pula yang jahat. Seandainya saja anda menghijab istri-istri para ibu kaum mukmin itu.’ Setelah itu Allah swt. menurunkan ayat tentang hijab.”

Ada pula riwayat yang menyebutkan bahwa Umar r.a. pernah berjalan melewati istri-istri Nabi saw. sementara mereka sedang bersama dengan kaum muslimah lain di masjid. Umar lantas berkata, “Andai saja mereka mengenakan hijab, hal itu lebih utama bagi mereka atas kaum wanita lainnya, sebagaimana mereka menikahi lelaki yang paling utama (Muhammad saw.).”

Zaynab r.a. kemudian menimpali, “Wahai Ibn Al Khattab, sesungguhnya Anda tertipu oleh kami, karena wahyu itu turun di rumah kami.”

Tidak lama kemudian, ayat tentang hijab turun.

Apa yang tercantum dalam ayat maupun hadits di atas menunjukkan secara pasti bahwa, semua itu ditujukan kepada istri-istri Nabi saw. dan tidak diperuntukkan bagi kaum muslimah lainnya.

Sementara itu, potongan ayat yang berbunyi, “Waqarna fi buyutikunna (hendaklah kalian tetap tinggal di rumah-rumah kalian),” juga khusus ditujukan kepada istri-istri Rasulullah saw.. Lengkapnya, teks ayat ini berbunyi sebagai sebagai berkut, “Hai isteri-isteri Nabi, kamu sekalian tidaklah seperti wanita yang lain, jika kamu bertakwa. Maka janganlah kamu tunduk dalam berbicara sehingga berkeinginanlah orang yang ada penyakit dalam hatinya dan ucapkanlah perkataan yang baik. Dan hendaklah kamu tetap di rumahmu dan janganlah kamu berhias dan bertingkah laku seperti orang-orang jahiliyah yang dahulu dan dirikanlah shalat, tunaikanlah zakat dan taatilah Allah dan Rasul-Nya. Sesungguhnya Allah bermaksud hendak menghilangkan dosa dari kamu, hai ahlul bait dan membersihkan kamu sebersih-bersihnya” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [ 33]: 32-33).

Inti ayat ini jelas ditujukan khusus kepada istri-istri Nabi saw., karena seruannya pun hanya ditujukan kepada mereka, sebagaimana kalimat awal yang tercantum dalam ayat tersebut, yakni ungkapan, “Ya nisa an Nabi, lastuna ka ‘ahadin min an nisa (Wahai istri-istri Nabi saw., kalian tidaklah sama dengan wanita lain).”

Tidak ada suatu petunjuk atau indikasi apapun di dalam nash ini melainkan khusus ditujukan kepada istri-istri Nabi saw.. Di akhir ayat itu sendiri terdapat tekanan, “Inna yuridullahu litudzhiba ‘ankum ar rijsa ahlul bayti wa yuthahirakum tathira (Sesungguhnya Allah bermaksud hendak menghilangkan kotoran dari kalian, wahai ahlul bait, dan membersihkan kalian sebersih-bersihnya).”

Ayat ini juga menerangkan bahwa sifat ini khusus ditujukan kepada istri-istri Nabi saw.. Mereka diperintahkan untuk melaksanakan apa yang telah dititahkan kepada mereka agar mereka dibebaskan dari kotoran dan disucikan, karena mereka termasuk ke dalam ahlul bait (keluarga) Nabi saw.. Penegasan ini secara langsung terdapat pula pada ayat berikutnya setelah firman-Nya, “Wa yuthirakum tathira,” yang berfungsi sebagai penguat. Ayat tersebut berbunyi, “Dan ingatlah apa yang dibacakan di rumahmu dari ayat-ayat Allah dan hikmah (sunnah Nabimu). Sesungguhnya Allah adalah Maha Lembut lagi Maha Mengetahui” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 34).

Ayat ini menyebutkan bahwa rumah-rumah para istri Nabi saw. adalah tempat turunnya wahyu. Ayat ini juga memerintahkan mereka agar tidak melupakan ayat-ayat yang dibacakan di dalam rumah mereka.

Kedua ayat di atas secara jelas ditujukan khusus bagi istri-istri Nabi saw.; tidak ada satu petunjuk pun di dalamnya bahwa ketetapan hukumnya berlaku juga bagi para wanita muslimah lain selain mereka. Di dalam ayat tersebut terdapat pula seruan yang juga ditujukan secara khusus bagi istri-istri Rasulullah saw., misalnya firman Allah swt. yang berbunyi, “…tidak pula kalian mengawini istri-istrinya selamanya setelah ia wafat” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 53).

Artinya, istri-istri Nabi saw. tidak boleh menikah setelah beliau wafat. Kenyataan ini berbeda dengan para wanita muslimah lainnya, karena mereka boleh menikah jika telah lepas dari suaminya. Dengan demikian, kedua ayat mengenai hijab di atas khusus ditujukan bagi istri-istri Nabi saw., sebagaimana larangan bagi mereka untuk menikah setelah beliau wafat.

Disini tidak berlaku kaidah berikut, “Berlakunya hukum ditentukan oleh umumnya lafal, bukan khususnya sebab.”

Artinya, dalam konteks ini, tidak bisa disimpulkan bahwa, sebab turunnya ayat tersebut memang khusus berkaitan dengan istri-istri Nabi saw., tetapi patokan hukumnya berlaku umum bagi mereka maupun para wanita muslimah lainnya. Pendapat seperti ini tidak bisa diterma. Sebab, yang disebut dengan sabab an nuzul (latar belakang turunnya) ayat adalah mengacu pada suatu peristiwa yang terjadi, sementara dalam ayat tersebut, istri-istri Nabi saw. bukanlah peristiwa yang terjadi dan ditunjuk oleh ayat tersebut. Ayat tersebut merupakan nash tertentu yang menjelaskan apa yang seharusnya dilakukan oleh orang-orang tertentu. Artinya, nashnya hanya menyangkut para istri Nabi saw. semata-mata sebagaimana firman Allah swt., “Wahai istri-istri Nabi, kalian berbeda dengan wanita lain” (Q.S. A Ahzab [33]: 32). “Apabila kalian hendak meminta sesuatu (keperluan) kepada mereka (istri-istri Nabi saw.)…” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 53).

Selain itu, adanya kata ganti (dhamir) yang mengacu pada para istri Rasulullah saw. dan adanya ketentuan yang hanya ditujukan untuk mereka saja, bukan yang lain, merupakan ‘illat (alasan) bahwa perintah untuk mengenakan hijab pun hanya khusus bagi mereka saja. Apalagi pernyataan pada ayat tersebut dilanjutkan dengan kalimat, “Kalian tidak boleh menyakiti (hati) Rasulullah saw.” (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 53).

Semua ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua ayat di atas diturunkan khusus bagi para istri Nabi saw.. Dengan demikian, kaidah al ibrah bi umum al lafzhi la bi khusus as sabab (Hukum berlaku karena umumnya lafal, bukan karena khususnya sebab), tidak layak dipakai di sini.

Dalam konteks ini pun, tidak bisa dikatakan bahwa, seruan terhadap para istri Rasulullah saw. berlaku juga bagi para wanita muslimah lainnya. Sebab, kaidah yang menyatakan, “Seruan terhadap individu tertentu adalah berlaku pula bagi kaum mukmin secara umum”, hanyalah diperuntukkan secara khusus bagi Rasulullah saw. atas kaum mukmin, tidak berlaku bagi para istri beliau atas para wanita mukmin. Dengan kata lain, seruan terhadap Rasulullah saw. memang berlaku pula bagi kaum mukmin, sedangkan seruan kepada istri Nabi saw. adalah khusus ditujukan bagi mereka saja. Sebab, Rasulullah saw. merupakan teladan (yang wajib diikuti oleh seluruh kaum mukmin-pen) dalam setiap ucapan, perilaku, ataupun diamnya beliau –selama tidak ada pengkhususan bagi diri beliau. Sebaliknya, para istri beliau bukanlah teladan (maksudnya yang wajib diikuti oleh seluruh kaum mukmin-pen). Allah swt. telah berfirman:Sesungguhnya telah ada pada diri Rasulullah itu suri tauladan yang baik bagi kalian. (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 21).

Dengan demikian, para istri Nabi saw. tidak wajib dijadikan suri tauladan (bagi seluruh kaum mukmin-pen), sehingga setiap mukmin akan melakukan suatu perbuatan karena perbuatan tersebut dilakukan oleh mereka, ataupun mencontoh suatu sifat karena sifat tersebut ada pada diri mereka. Yang wajib diteladani dan dicontoh hanyalah Rasulullah saw. semata, sebab beliau tidak melakukan apapun, kecuali senantiasa berlandaskan pada wahyu.

Lebih dari itu, tidak bisa juga dikatakan bahwa, jika para istri Rasulullah saw. saja –yang terjaga kesuciannya dan di rumah-rumah mereka selalu dibacakan wahyu- diperintah untuk mengenakan hijab maka sesungguhnya para wanita muslimah lain adalah lebih layak lagi terkena seruan itu. Pendapat semacam ini tidak dapat diterima karena dua alasan:

Pertama, masalahnya bukanlah mana yang lebih patut atau lebih layak. Sebab, tentang persoalan mana yang lebih layak atau lebih patut terkait dengan larangan Alah swt. terhadap sesuatu yang sepele, sehingga hal itu mengandung pengertian bahwa, larangan terhadap sesuatu yang sifatnya lebih besar –dari pada sesuatu yang sifatnya sepele tersebut- tentu dipandang lebih layak lagi. Allah swt. misalnya, berfirman: Janganlah kamu mengatakan kepada keduanya (orang tua), “Ah”. (Q.S. Al Isra [17]: 23).

Maknanya, jika sekadar mengucapkan kata “ah” saja sudah dilarang, apalagi memukul keduanya, tentu lebih terlarang lagi. Dalam ayat lain, Allah swt. berfirman: Di antara ahli Kitab ada orang yang jika kamu mempercayakan kepadanya harta yang banyak, dikembalikannya kepadamu; dan di antara mereka ada orang yang jika kamu mempercayakan kepadanya satu dinar, tidak dikembalikannya kepadamu. (Q.S. Ali Imran [3]: 75).

Maknanya demikian. Dalam konteks yang pertama, mereka tentu akan mengembalikan harta yang jauh lebih banyak lagi; sementara dalam konteks yang kedua, mereka tentu tidak akan mengembalikan harta yang jumlahnya jauh di bawah satu dinar. Sebaliknya, ayat yang berkaitan dengan kewajiban mengenakan hijab tidak bisa ditinjau dari prinsip min bab al ula (mana yang lebih), karena konteks kalimat pada ayat tersebut memang tidak terkait dengan siapapun selain isri-istri Nabi saw., dan tidak mengandung pengertian lain. Kata Nisa an Nabi (istri-istri Nabi saw.) bukanlah sifat yang diambil dari proses pemahaman (washfan mufahaman) sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa, selain istri-istri nabi saw. adalah lebih layak (untuk mengenakan hijab-pen). Sebaliknya, kata tersebut merupakan nama yang sudah baku (ism jamia) sehingga tidak mengandung konotasi (pengertian) lain. Dengan kata lain, ungkapan dalam ayat tersebut hanya berkaitan dengan apa yang secara khusus ditunjukkan oleh nash, tidak lebih dan tidak mengandung pemahaman lain. Ayat tersebut juga tidak berkaitan sama sekali dengan topik min bab al ula (mana yang lebih), baik secara tekstual/literak (ditinjau dari segi lahiriahnya) ataupun secara kontekstual (ditinjau dari segi konteksnya).

Kedua, kedua ayat dimaksud merupakan perintah yang ditujukan hanya kepada individu-individu tertentu yang karakternya telah disifati dengan sifat-sifat tertentu, sehingga tidak berlaku sama sekali bagi selain mereka, baik yang derajatnya lebih tinggi ataupun yang lebih rendah dari pada mereka. Sebab, kedua ayat tersebut menyebuti sifat-sifat tertentu yang dinisbatkan kepada orang-orang tertentu. Artinya, perintah dalam kedua ayat tersebut hanya ditujukan bagi mereka yang benar-benar termasuk istri Rasulullah saw., karena kedudukan mereka berbeda dengan wanita muslimah pada umumnya; selain itu, interaksi para sahabat dengan istri-istri Rasulullah saw., tanpa ada hijab akan mengganggu beliau.

Dengan melihat paparan di atas, terbukti sudah bahwa, kaidah al ibrah bi umum al lafzhi la bi khusus as sabab (hukum berlaku karena umumnya lafal, bukan karena khususnya sebab) tidak layak dan tidak relevan dengan topik ini. Demikian pula tentang kewajiban untuk meneladani istri-istri Rasulullah saw. dan prinsip min bab al ula (mana yang lebih). Sebaliknya, terbukti pula bahwa nash tersebut secara pasti hanya ditujukan bagi istri-istri Nabi saw. semata. Artinya, kedua ayat yang diperbincangkan di atas hanya berkenaan dengan istri-istri Rasulullah saw. semata, sehingga tidak terkait sama sekali –dari sisi manapun- dengan kaum wanita muslimah lainnya.

Walhasil, kewajiban mengenakan hijab atas wajah –disamping perintah agar tetap tinggal di rumah –hanya ditujukan secara khusus bagi istri-istri Nabi saw.. Atas dasar ini, kesimpulan hukum yang diambil dari proses penggalian dalil terhadap kedua ayat di atas –sehingga disimpulkan bahwa hijab atas wajah telah disyariatkan bagi para wanita muslimah- telah gugur dengan sendirinya.

Selanjutnya mengenai ayat kedua yang dimunculkan adalah firman Allah swt. berikut:Hendaklah mereka mengulurkan jilbab masing-masing ke seluruh tubuh mereka. (Q.S. Al Ahzab [33]: 59). Ayat di atas sama sekali tidak menunjukkan perintah untuk menutupi wajah dalam kondisi apapun, baik dilihat secara tekstual (manthuqan) maupun secara konseptual (mafhuman). Di dalamnya tidak ditemui satu katapun yang menunjukkan kesimpulan semacam itu –baik secara tersendiri (kata demi kata) maupun secara integral dalam kalimat- sebagai legitimasi atas sabab an nuzulnya. Artinya, potongan ayat yang berbunyi yudnina ‘alayhinna min jalabibihinna bermakna mengulurkan jilbab atas seluruh tubuh mereka. Kata min dalam ayat ini bukan menunjukkan pada makna sebagian (li at tab’idh), tetapi menunjukkan pada makna penjelasan (li al bayan), yakni mengulurkan jilbab ke seluruh tubuh (dari bagian atas hingga ke bagian bawah). Secara etimologis, kata adna (akar kata dari kata yudnina yang terdapat pada ayat ini-pen) bermakna arkha’ (mengulurkan hingga ke bawah). Dengan demikian, kata yudnina sama maknanya dengan kata yurkhina.

Sementara itu, yang dimaksud dengan jilbab itu sendiri bisa bermakna milhafah (baju kurung atau semacam abaya yang longgar dan tidak tipis), kain (kisa’) apa saja yang dapat menutupi, atau pakaian (tsawb) yang dapat menutupi seluruh bagian tubuh. Di dalam kamus al Muhith dinyatakan demikian:Jilbab itu laksana sirdab (terowongan) atau sinmar (lorong), yakni baju atau pakaian yang longgar bagi wanita selain baju kurung atau kain apa saja yang dapat menutupi pakaian kesehariannya seperti halnya baju kurung. Sedangkan dalam kamus ash Shahah, al Jawhari menyatakan: Jilbab adalah kain panjang dan longgar (milhafah) yang sering disebut mula’ah (baju kurung). Di dalam hadits disebutkan bahwa, jilbab adalah baju kurung yang dikenakan oleh wanita pada bagian luar pakaian kesehariannya yang lazim digunakan di dalam rumah. Ummu Athiyah pernah bertutur demikian: Rasulullah saw. memerintahkan kami –baik ia budak wanita, wanita haid, ataupun wanita perawan- agar keluar (menuju lapangan) pada hari raya Idul Fitri dan Idul Adha. Bagi para wanita yang sedang haid diperintahkan untuk menjauh dari tempat shalat, namun tetap menyaksikan kebaikan dan seruan atas kaum muslimin. Aku lantas berkata, “Ya Rasulullah salah seorang diantara kami tidak memiliki jilbab”. Rasulullah pun menjawab, “Hendaklah saudaranya meminjamkan jilbabnya kepadanya”.

Artinya, wanita tersebut tidak memiliki pakaian (baca: jilbab) yang akan dikenakan pada bagian luar pakaian kesehariannya, ketika hendak keluar rumah. Karena itulah, Rasulullah saw. memerintahkan agar saudaranya meminjamkan jilbab kepadanya yang akan dikenakan pada bagian luar pakaian kesehariannya. Dengan demikian, ayat di atas bermakna bahwa, Allah swt. telah meminta Rasulullah saw. agar menyampaikan kepada para istri dan anak-anak wanitanya beserta istri orang-orang mukmin supaya mengulurkan kain pada bagian atas pakaian keseharian mereka hingga ke bawah. Pengertian semacam ini di dasarkan pada sebuah dalil, yakni berupa riwayat yang telah dikemukakan dari Ibnu Abbas yang menyatakan bahwa jilbab adalah kain luar yang berfungsi untuk menutupi (pakaian keseharian wanita) dari atas sampai ke bawah. Ayat tersebut menunjukkan perintah agar mengulurkan jilbab, yaitu kain yang luas dan lebar, hingga ke bawah dan tidak menunjukkan makna yang lainnya.

Jika demikian kenyataannya, bagaimana mungkin sampai muncul pemahaman bahwa kalimat yudnina ‘alayhinna min jalabibihinna bermakna mengenakan pakaian yang dapat menutupi wajah? Betapapun lafal yudnina dan jilbab ditafsirkan berdasarkan batas-batas pengertian bahasa maupun syariat, ayat tersebut tetap menunjukkan bahwa yang dimaksud adalah mengulurkan pakaian (irkha’ ats tsiyab) yang dilakukan sampai ke bawah, dan bukan menariknya hingga ke atas. Atas dasar ini, di dalam ayat tersebut tidak ditemukan satu dalil pun –atau bahkan sekadar syubhah ad dalil (sesuatu yang mirip dalil)- yang menunjukkan adanya keharusan mengenakan hijab atas wajah ditinjau dari sisi manapun.

Sebagaimana kita ketahui, kata-kata atau kalimat-kalimat dalam Al Quran bisa ditafsirkan sebatas dalam konteks bahasa (etimologi) dan syariat, dan tidak bisa ditafsirkan selain dengan dua cara ini. Secara bahasa, makna ayat tersebut telah jelas, yakni memerintahkan para wanita agar mengulurkan jilbab atas seluruh bagian tubuhnya atau agar menurunkan sekaligus menghamparkan jilbab yang dikenakannya pada bagian luar pakaian kesehariannya –yang lazim dipakai di dalam rumah- ke bawah hingga menutupi kedua kakinya. Keharusan untuk mengulurkan jilbab (irkha’ ats tsiyab) hingga ke bawah ini telah ditunjukkan di dalam hadits yang diriwayatkan dari Ibnu Umar. Ia menuturkan demikian:

Rasulullah saw. telah bersabda, “Siapa saja yang mengulurkan pakaiannya karena sombong, Allah tidak akan memandangnya pada hari Kiamat”. Ummu Salamah bertanya, “Lantas, bagaimana dengan ujung pakaian yang dibuat oleh para wanita”? Rasulullah saw. menjawab, “Hendaklah diulurkan sejengkal”. Ummu Salamah berkata lagi, “Kalau begitu, akan tampak kedua kakinya”, Rasulullah menjawab lagi, “Hendaklah diulurkan sehasta dan jangan ditambah”.

Demikianlah pembahasan mengenai ayat-ayat yang dijadikan dalil oleh mereka yang menyerukan bahwa hijab atas wajah telah disyariatkan oleh Allah swt. atas para wanita muslimah. Sementara itu, hadits-hadits yang dijadikan dalil oleh mereka tentang keharusan wanita muslimah mengenakan hijab atas wajah sesungguhnya tidak menunjukkan pengertian ini. Sebab, hadits mengenai budak mukatab –jika ia mampu membayar tebusannya- yang diperintahkan untuk mengenakan hijab di hadapan tuannya, adalah khusus terkait dengan istri-istri Nabi saw.. Hadits ini diperkuat hadits lain. Abu Qilabah bertutur .Istri-istri Nabi saw. tida mengenakan hijab di hadapan budak mukatab yang masih memiliki harta satu dinar (untuk tebusan).

Disini, tidak ada dalil yang menunjukkan bahwa wanita muslimah harus mengenakan hijab atas wajah. Di sisi lain, hadits Ummu Salamah serta permintaan Nabi saw. kepadanya dan kepada Hafshah agar masing-masing mengenakan hijab atas wajah adalah hadits dha’if (lemah), sehingga tidak dapat dijadikan hujjah. Apalagi hadits tersebut hanya khusus ditujukan bagi istri-istri Rasulullah saw., yakni Ummu Salamah dan Hafshah.

Para penunggang (unta dan kuda) pernah melewati kami, sementara kami bersama-sama Rasulullah saw. sedang berihram. Tatkala mereka mendekat ke arah kami, salah seorang diantara kami menurunkan jilbabnya dari rambut ke wajahnya. Ketika mereka berlalu, kami membukanya kembali.

Hadits ini bertentangan dengan apa yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Bukhari dari Ibnu Umar. Ia menyatakan bahwa Nabi saw. pernah bersabda sebagai berikut:Wanita yang sedang berihram tidak wajib menutup wajahnya (mengenakan cadar) dan tidak wajib pula menutup kedua tangannya.

Dakam kitab Fath al Bari, disebutkan bahwa cadar adalah kain yang dikenakan di atas hidung atau dibawah lekukan mata. Dengan demikian, hadits Aisyah ra menyebutkan bahwa wanita yang sedang berihram telah menutupi wajahnya tatkala di hadapannya lewat para pengendara (unta), sementara hadits Ibnu Umar menunjukkan larangan mengenakan cadar, artinya tidak menutupi apapun kecuali bagian bawah wajah. Jika demikian kenyataannya, lantas bagaimana mungkin pengertian kedua hadits tersebut dikaitkan dengan upaya untuk menutupi wajah seluruhnya dengan kain dan menghamparkannya di atas wajah? Dengan merujuk pada kedua hadits tersebut, jelaslah bahwa, hadits Aisyah bersumber dari penuturan Mujahid. Yahya ibn Said al Qathan telah menyatakan bahwa ia tidak pernah mendengar hadits tersebut dari Aisyah. Sebaliknya, hadits yang dituturkan oleh Ibnu Umar adalah hadits shahih yang telah dikemukakan oleh Imam Bukhari. Oleh karena itu, hadits yang dituturkan oleh Aisyah dengan sendirinya tertolak karena dha’if dan bertentangan dengan hadits shahih, sehingga tidak dapat dijadikan hujjah.

Sementara itu, hadits mengenai Fadhil ibn Abbas bukanlah dalil bagi keharusan untuk mengenakan hijab, tetapi justru merupakan dalil bagi tidak adanya keharusan untuk mengenakan hijab. Sebab, Khuts’amiyah sendiri ketika menanyakan sesuatu kepada Rasulullah saw. wajahnya tampak. Buktinya, Fadhl sempat memandang wajahnya, dan adanya kalimat terakhir yang tercantum dalam hadits tersebut yang berbunyi sebagai berikut:Oleh karena itu, Rasulullah saw. memalingkan wajah Fadhl ke arah yang lain.

Dalam riwayat dari Ali bin Abi Thalib ra ditambahkan keterangan sebagai berikut:Abbas ra kemudian bertanya kepada Rasulullah saw., “Ya Rasulullah, mengapa anda memalingkan leher keponakan anda?” Rasulullah saw. menjawab, “Karena saya melihat seorang pemuda dan seorang pemudi yang tidak aman dari gangguan setan”.

Dengan kata lain, hadits Khuts’amiyah menunjukkan tentang ketidak harusan wanita muslimah untuk mengenakan hijab, bukan menunjukkan tentang kewajiban untuk mengenakan hijab. Alasannya, Rasulullah saw. sendiri melihat Khuts’amiyah yang memperlihatkan wajahnya, sehingga beliau memalingkan pandangan Fadhl, karena ia memandang wanita tersebut dengan disertai syahwat, sebagaimana dinyatakan dalam hadits riwayat Ali ra, “…yang tidak aman dari gangguan setan”.

Karena itulah, Rasulullah saw. memalingkan wajah Fadhl, karena ia memandang wanita tersebut disertai syahwat, bukan memandangnya dengan pandangan biasa atau wajar. Padahal, memandang wanita asing yang disertai syahwat –meskipun hanya melihat wajah dan kedua telapak tangan- adalah tindakan yang diharamkan.

Sementara itu, dalam hadits tentang pandangan yang tiba-tiba (tidak disengaja), Rasulullah saw. memerintahkan Jarir untuk memalingkan atau menundukkan pandangannya, sebagaimana dinyatakan dalam firman Allah swt.:Katakanlah kepada laki-laki mukmin, hendaklah mereka menahan pandangannya. (Q.S. An Nur [24]: 30).

Yang dimaksud ayat ini adalah pandangan yang tiba-tiba terhadap selain wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita yang termasuk aurat, bukan pandangan terhadap wajah dan kedua telapak tangan. Sebab, melihat wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita merupakan tindakan yang dibolehkan, meskipun secara sengaja. Dalilnya adalah adanya kebolehan untuk memandang wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita sebagaimana yang tercantum dalam hadits mengenai Kuts’amiyah. Selain itu, Rasulullah saw. sendiri telah melihat wajah kaum wanita tatkala mereka membaiat beliau dan tatkala beliau memberikan nasihat kepada mereka. Kenyataan ini menunjukkan bahwa yang menjadi pokok masalah adalah pandangan yang tidak di sengaja terhadap anggota tubuh wanita selain wajah dan dua telapak tangannya. Dalam konteks ini, hadits Nabi saw., sebagaimana dituturkan Ali ra yang berbunyi, “Janganlah engkau mengikuti pandangan pertama dengan pandangan berikutnya”, mengandung larangan untuk memandang wajah wanita secara berulang-ulang atau terus menerus, bukan larangan agar melihatnya sama sekali.

Atas dasar ini, berarti tidak terdapat hadits yang menunjukkan bahwa Allah swt. telah mensyariatkan wanita muslimah untuk mengenakan hijab atas wajahnya, sebagaimana yang diserukan oleh mereka yang berpendirian seperti ini.

Walhasil, jelaslah bahwa, tidak ada satu dalilpun yang menunjukkan bahwa Allah swt. telah mewajibkan wanita muslimah untuk mengenakan hijab atas wajahnya atau bahwa wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita merupakan aurat, baik dalam waktu shalat maupun di luar shalat. Dalil-dalil yang ditunjukkan oleh mereka tidak ada relevansinya dengan kewajiban untuk mengenakan hijab, apalagi riwayat dan penunjukkan dalilnya lemah.

Sebagaimana diketahui, wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita bukanlah aurat. Oleh karena itu, seorang wanita boleh keluar menuju pasar atau melewati jalan umum menuju ke tempat manapun dengan menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangannya. Sebab, hal ini telah ditegakan di dalam Al Quran maupun hadits. Dalam Al Quran terdapat firman Allah yang berbunyi: dan janganlah mereka menampakkan perhiasannya, kecuali yang (biasa) nampak dari padanya. dan hendaklah mereka menutupkan kain kudung kedadanya, (Q.S. An Nur [24]: 31).

Di dalam ayat ini, Allah swt. melarang wanita muslimah untuk menampakkan perhiasannya atau untuk menampakkan bagian tubuh tempat melekat perhiasannya. Inilah maksud dari larangan tersebut. Pengecualian atas bagian tubuh selain tempat melekatnya perhiasan, yakni berupa apa yang biasa tampak, sudah sangat jelas. Artinya, pada diri wanita terdapat bagian-bagian tubuh tertentu tempat melekat perhiasannya yang biasa tampak. Bagian-bagian tubuh tersebut secara eksplisit memang tidak dimasukkan ke dalam larangan. Hal ini tidak memerlukan perincian lebih lanjut. Sebab, Allah swt. telah melarang para wanita mukmin untuk menampakkan perhiasannya, kecuali apa yang biasa tampak pada dirinya. Tafsir mengenai bagian tubuh wanita yang mana yang dimaksud dalam potongan firman Allah swt. yang berbunyi, “Illa ma zhahara minha”, dapat dikembalikan pada dua hal: (1) Tafsir secara literal atau tekstual (manqul); (2) Tafsir secara konseptual (mafhum), yakni melalui apa yang dapat dipahami dari kalimat ma zhahara minha. Hal ini dapat ditempuh dengan cara mengimplementasikannya pada apa yang biasa tampak pada diri para wanita muslim di hadapan Nabi saw. pada zamannya, yakni pada periode turunnya ayat tersebut.

Secara literal atau tekstual (manqul), pengertian kalimat dari ayat tersebut dikemukakan oleh Ibnu Abas. Ia menafsirkan bahwa, yang dimaksud ma zhahara minha (apa yang biasa tampak pada dirinya) adalah wajah dan kedua telapak tangan. Pendapat ini sejalan dengan pendapat para ahli tafsir yang lain. Ibn At Thabari, misalnya menyatakan demikian: Yang paling benar dalam masalah ini adalah pendapat yang menyatakan bahwa yang dimaksud adalah wajah dan dua telapak tangan. Imam al Qurthubi berpendapat sebagai berikut:Wajah dan kedua telapak tangan lazim tampak, baik dalam adat kebiasaan maupun dalam prosesi peribadatan seperti haji dan shalat. Oleh karena itu, pengecualian itu selayaknya dikembalikan maksudnya pada dua anggota badan ini.

Pendapat ini didukung oleh Imam az Zumakhsyari yang menyatakan demikian: Sesungguhnya seorang wanita, tatkala melakukan sesuatu, mutlak harus menggunakan kedua telapak tangannya dan menampakkan wajahnya; terutama dalam masalah kesaksian, pengadilan dan perkawinan. Ia pun terpaksa harus keluar di jalanan umum sehingga tampak kedua kakinya, terutama yang dialami oleh para wanita fakir. Inilah pengertian dari firman Allah swt. yang berunyi, “Illa ma zhahara minha”.

Sementara itu secara konseptual, yakni melalui pemahaman terhadap kalimat ma zhahara minha, pengertiannya sangat jelas, bahwa apa yang biasa tampak pada diri wanita tatkala ayat ini turun adalah wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Kaum wanita biasa menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka di hadapan Nabi saw.. Kenyataan mereka seperti ini tidak bisa dipungkiri. Mereka biasa menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka pada saat pergi ke pasar atau melewati jalan-jalan umum. Fenomena semacam ini sudah amat banyak dan terhitung jumlahnya. Diantaranya adalah sejumlah fakta sejarah atau riwayat berikut ini: Pertama, riwayat Jabir ibn Abdillah. Ia bertutur demikian:

Saya pernah bersama-sama Rasulullah saw. pada hari Id. Ketika itu, shalat dimulai sebelum khutbah tanpa azan maupun iqamah. Rasulullah saw. kemudian berdiri sambil bersandar pada Bilal memerintahkan kaum muslim agar bertakwa kepada Allah swt. dan menganjurkan mereka agar menaati-Nya. Beliaupun menasihati dan memperingatkan mereka. Setelah itu, beliau berlalu sampai datang para wanita kepadanya. Beliau kemudiaan bersabda kepada mereka, “Hendaklah kalian bersedekah, karena sesungguhnya kebanyakan penghuni neraka adalah para wanita”, salah seorang wanita diantara kerumunan itu, sambil memukul-mukul pipinya berkata, “Mengapa demikian, wahai Rasulullah”? Beliau menjawab, “Karena kalian banyak mengeluh dan menolak keluarga kalian”. Kemudian Rasulullah saw. menganjurkan mereka untuk menyedekahkan perhiasan-perhiasan yang mereka miliki, baik berupa kalung maupun cincin, yang kemudian dikumpulkan pada kain Bilal.

Kedua, riwayat ‘Atha’ ibn Abi Rabbah. Ia menuturkan: Ibnu Abbas pernah berkata kepada saya, “Maukah anda saya tunjukkan seorang wanita yang termasuk ahli surga”? Saya menjawab, “Ya”. Ia kemudian menceritakan bahwa wanita tersebut berkulit hitam. Wanita itu pernah datang kepada Nabi saw. lalu berkata, “Aku ini menderita penyakit ayan sehingga auratku sering tersingkap. Karena itu, aku mohon anda berdoa kepada Allah swt. untukku”. Rasulullah saw. menjawab,”Sesungguhnya jika engkau menghendaki dan berlaku sabar, balasannya adalah surga. Akan tetapi jika engkau menghendaki aku bisa mendoakanmu supaya engkau sembuh”. Wanita itu berkata, “Kalau begitu, aku akan bersabar. Akan tetapi auratku tersingkap. Karena itu doakanlah agar auratku tidak tersingkap”. Setelah itu Nabi saw. mendoakannya.

Ketiga, riwayat Fathimah binti Qais. Disebutkan bahwa Abu Amr Ibn Hafshah telah menjatuhkan talak tiga kepadanya, sedangkan Abu Amr sendiri tidak ada di tempat waktu itu. Fathimah lantas mendatangi Rasulullah saw. dan menceritakan keadannya. Beliau kemudian memerintahnya untuk menunggu ‘iddah di rumah Ummu Syarik seraya bersabda:

Wanita itu telah tertipu sahabatku. Hendaklah engkau menunggu masa ‘iddah di ruamh Ummi Maktum, sebab ia adalah lelaki buta. Engkau bisa membuka pakaian sementara ia tidak melihat.

Dengan demikian Nabi saw. secara tidak langsung membiarkan Fathimah binti Qays dilihat oleh kaum pria tatkala beliau menyuruhnya untuk menunggu masa iddahnya di rumah Ummu Syarik. Namun demikian, beliau tidak membolehkan ia membuka pakaiannya di rumah Ummu Syarik yang selalu didatangi oleh kaum pria agar tidak tampak apa yang diharamkan untuk dilihat. Beliau kemudian memerintahkan Fathimah binti Qays untuk pindah dan menghabiskan masa iddahnya di rumah Ummi Maktum.

Keempat, riwayat Abu Bakar yang bersumber dari Ibnu Jurayj. Ia menuturkan bahwa Aisyah pernah berkata demikian: Keponakan perempuanku pernah masuk ke ruanganku seraya bersolek. Rasulullah saw. kemudian masuk pula ke ruanganku sambil berpaling. Aku lantas berkata, “Wahai Rasulullah, ia adalah keponakan perempuanku, dan ia masih kecil”, akan tetapi, Rasulullah saw. bersabda, “Jika seorang wanita telah mengalami haid, ia tidak boleh menampakkan tubuhnya, kecuali wajah dan ini”. Beliau berkata demikian sambil menggenggam tangannya dan membiarkan jari-jemarinya saling menggenggam satu sama lain.

Riwayat lain yang menunjukkan bahwa telapak tangan wanita bukanlah aurat adalah kenyataan bahwa Rasulullah saw. berjabat angan dengan kaum wanita tatkala mereka membaiat beliau. Dalam hal ini Ummu Athiyah bertutur:

Kami telah membaiat Nabi saw. beliau kemudian menyatakan kepada kami untuk tidak akan menyekutukan Allah dan tidak akan meratap. Akan tetapi kemudian, seorang wanita diantara kami menarik kembali tangannya. Lalu berkata, “Seorang wanita telah membahagiakan diriku dan aku ingin sekali membalasnya”. Akan tetapi Beliau tidak mengomentarinya sedikitpun. Wanita itu pergi dan lalu kembali lagi

Hadits ini dengan jelas menunjukkan bahwa para wanita muslimah telah berbaiat dengan tangan mereka. Alasannya, salah seorang dari mereka telah menarik tangannya setelah sebelumnya diulurkannya ketika hendak berbaiat. Dengan demikian hadits ini menunjukkan bahwa tangan wanita tersebut –sebagaimana tangan para wanita lainnya- digenggam tatkala terdengar ucapan baiat. Kenyataan ini secara jelas menunjukkan bahwa baiat dilakukan dengan tangan dan Rasulullah saw. telah membaiat kaum wanita dengan tangannya yang mulia.

Memang ada riwayat dari Aisyah tatkala berkata:Tangan Rasulullah tidak pernah menyentuh tangan seorang wanitapun, kecuali wanita yang dimilikinya. Pernyataan ini hanya merupakan pendapat Aisyah ra sebatas apa yang diketahuinya. Jika pernyataan Aisyah ini diperbandingkan dengan hadits yang dituturkan oleh Ummu ‘Athiyah, maka hadits yang dituturkan Ummu ‘Athiyah jelas lebih kuat (valid), karena hadits tersebut menunjukkan aktivitas real yang terjadi di hadapan Rasulullah saw., sekaligus menunjukkan perbuatan Rasulullah saw. sendiri. Hadits ini jelas lebih kuat dibandingkan dengan pendapat Aisyah. Oleh karena itu para perawi hadits memandang kuat hadits Ummu ‘Athiyah ini. Mereka mengambil hadits ini dan karenanya membolehkan kaum pria berjabat tangan dengan kaum wanita.

Kelima hadits di atas menunjukkan gambaran yang pasti bahwa yang biasa tampak pada kaum wanita adalah wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Hadits yang keempat menunjukkan bahwa, Rasulullah saw. berpaling dari pandangannya terhadap wanita yang sedang bersolek karena ia menampakkan bagian tubuh selain yang biasa tampak. Beliau lalu menjelaskan bahwa ia tidak boleh menampakkan bagian tubuhnya, kecuali wajah dan kedua telapak tangannya. Kenyataan ini mengisyaratkan bahwa wajah dan kedua telapak tangan bukanlah aurat, baik dalam waktu shalat maupun di luar waktu shalat, karena ayatnya berbentuk umum: dan janganlah mereka menampakkan perhiasannya, kecuali yang (biasa) nampak dari padanya. (Q.S. An Nur [24]: 31).

Sementara itu, ayat sesudahnya, jika dipahami menunjukkan bahwa wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita bukanlah aurat, karena Allah swt. berfirman: dan hendaklah mereka menutupkan kain kudung kedadanya, (Q.S. An Nur [24]: 31).

Kata khumur (kerudung) pada ayat di atas adalah bentuk jamak dari kata khimar, yaitu sebentuk kain yang berfungsi untuk menutupi kepala; sedangkan kata juyub (kerah baju) adalah bentuk jamak dari kata jayb yaitu kreasi berupa lipatan kain pada penutup tubuh atau pakaian. Dengan demikian, Allah swt. memerintah para wanita muslimah untuk mengulurkan kerudungnya di atas leher dan dada mereka. Keduanya wajib untuk ditutupi. Sebaliknya, para wanita muslimah untuk mengulurkan kerudungnya di atas leher dan dada mereka. Keduanya wajib untuk ditutupi. Sebaliknya para wanita muslimah tidak diperintahkan untuk menutupi wajahnya dengan kainnya. Hal ini mengisyaratkan bahwa wajah bukanlah aurat. Jadi, makna kata jayb bukanlah dada sebagaimana yang mereka pahami, melainkan kerah pakaian (tawqah) yang terlipat dan terbuka di sekitar leher dan di atas dada. Memakai kerudung di atas jayb maknanya adalah mengulurkan kerudung di atas kerah pakaian di sekitar bagian leher sampai ke bagian dada. Sebab, perintahnya adalah menutup kepala hingga ke leher dan dada, kecuali wajah, sehingga hal itu menunjukkan bahwa wajah bukan aurat. Walhasil, tidak ada keharusan mengenakan hijab atas wajah bagi wanita. Allah swt. sendiri mensyariatkan hal semacam ini Itulah dalil-dalil yang digali dari Al Quran.

Sementara itu, ada sejumlah dalil yang bersumber dari hadits yang mengisyaratkan bahwa hijab atas wajah tidak disyariatkan oleh Allah swt., sekaligus menyatakan bahwa wajah dan kedua telapak tangan bukan merupakan aurat. Misalnya, hadits yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Abu Dawud yang bersumber dari Aisyah ra. disebutkan bahwa Asma binti Abu Bakar ra pernah memasuki ruangan Nabi saw. dengan mengenakan pakaian tipis, sehingga Rasulullah saw. pun berpaling seraya bersabda kepadanya:Asma’ sesungguhnya perempuan itu, jika telah baligh, tidak pantas untuk ditampakkan dari tubuhnya kecuali ini dan ini –sambil menunjuk wajahnya dan telapak tangan.

Imam Abu Dawud juga meriwayatkan hadits yang bersumber dari penuturan Qatadah. Dikatakan bahwa nabi saw. pernah bersabda: Jika seorang anak wanita telah mencapai usia baligh, tidak pantas terlihat dari dirinya selain wajah dan kedua telapak tangannya sampai bagian pergelangannya.

Imam al Baihaqi juga meriwayatkan hadits yang berasal dari Asma’ bin Umays. Ia bertutur demikian: Rasulullah saw. pernah masuk ke kamar Aisyah binti Abu Bakar sementara ia bersama dengan saudara perempuannya, yaitu Asma’ binti Abu Bakar, yang saat itu sedang mengenakan pakaian tipis (transparan) yang bagian lengannya longgar. Ketika Rasulullah saw. melihatnya, beliau segera bangkit dan kemudian keluar kamar. ‘Aisyah lantas berkata sambil mengikuti Rasulullah saw.. Rasulullah tampak seperti melihat sesuatu yang tidak disukainya sehingga ‘Aisyah pun menghampirinya. Akan tetapi kemudian, Rasulullah saw. masuk kembali. Beliau lantas ditanya oleh Aisyah, mengapa beliau sampai bangkit dan keluar? Beliau kemudian bersabda, “Tidaklah engkau melihat keadaannya? Ia seperti bukan wanita muslimah yang seharusnya hanya menampakkan ini dan ini”.

Beliau berkata demikian seraya mengambil kain dan hanya menutupkannya pada kedua tangannya sehingga yang tampak hanya jari jemarinya. Beliau kemudian melilitkan kain tersebut dengan kedua tangannya ke arah pelipis (kepalanya) hingga yang tampak hanya bagian wajahnya.

Hadits-hadits di atas secara jelas menunjukkan bahwa wajah dan kedua telapak tangan wanita bukanlah aurat. Hadits-hadits tersebut sekaligus menunjukkan bahwa Allah swt. tidak mensyariatkan agar para wanita menutupi wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Merekapun tidak diperintahkan untuk mengenakan hijab atas wajah mereka. Sebab, jika hal itu memang disyariatkan, sudah pasti ayat di atas akan bertentangan dengan sejumlah hadits yang tidak memungkinkan adanya penafsiran dan penakwilan apapun. Hadits-hadits yang ada bahkan mengisyaratkan secara jelas dan terang, bahwa wanita muslimah terbiasa keluar menuju pasar dengan menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Mereka juga terbiasa bercakap-cakap dengan pria asing (non mahram) seraya tetap menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Mereka melakukan berbagai interaksi sosial sebagaimana yang telah disyariatkan seperti jual beli, memberi upah, mendapatkan upah, tolong-menolong, perwakilan (wakalah), pertanggung jawaban (kafalah), dan lain-lain seraya tetap menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapak tangan mereka. Hijab atas wajah, dalam hal ini, tidak disyariatkan oleh Allah swt., kecuali kepada istri-istri Rasulullah saw..

Meskipun demikian, pendapat mengenai keharusan wanita muslimah untuk mengenakan hijab atas wajah merupakan pendapat yang Islami, karena terdapat syubhatut dalil (sesuatu yang mirip dalil). Pendapat semacam ini telah dilontarkan oleh sejumlah pemuka mujtahid dari berbagai mazhab. Akan tetapi harus diakui bahwa syubhat ad dalil yang diungkapkan oleh mereka termasuk lemah sehingga nyaris tidak relevan untuk dijadikan sebagai dalil.

Kini, tinggal satu persoalan yang masih tersisa, yakni berkaitan dengan pendapat yang dilontarkan oleh sebagian mujtahid bahwa hijab atas wajah telah disyariatkan kepada wanita karena adanya kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah. Artinya, mereka menyatakan bahwa wanita dilarang menampakkan wajahnya di tengah-tengah kaum pria bukan karena wajah itu aurat, tetapi karena adanya kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah. Pendapat semacam ini keliru ditinjau dari berbagai sisi.

Pertama, tidak ada dalil yang melarang menampakkan wajah disebabkan adanya kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah, baik dalam Al Quran, dalam as Sunnah, Ijma sahabat, ataupun illat syar’iyyah yang dapat di qiyas kan (dianalogikan) terhadap masalah ini. Oleh karena itu pendapat semacam ini tidak ada nilainya di hadapan syariat dan tidak dianggap sebagai hukum Islam. Sebab, hukum Islam adalah seruan Syari’ (pembuat hukum) yakni Allah, sementara larangan untuk menampakkan wajah karena adanya kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah tidak berasal dari seruan-Nya. Jika telah diketahui bahwa dalil-dalil syariat datang dalam bentuk yang mengikat, berarti ayat-ayat dan hadits-hadits yang ada telah membolehkan wanita muslimah untuk menampakkan wajah dan kedua telapan tangannya secara mutlak; tanpa persyaratan apapun dan tanpa ada pengecualian dalam keadaan apapun. Artinya, larangan untuk menampakkan wajah merupakan upaya pengharaman atas apa yang telah dihalalkan oleh Allah swt., dan kewajiban untuk menutupinya merupakan sesuatu yang sebenarnya tidak pernah diwajibkan oleh Allah, Penguasa Alam. Dengan kata lain, pendapat semacam ini, selain tidak dianggap sebagai bagian dari hukum Islam, sekaligus juga bertentangan dengan hukum Islam itu sendiri yang secara jelas tercantum dalam nash.

Kedua, sesungguhnya upaya untuk menjadikan kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah sebagai ‘illat untuk melarang wanita muslimah menampakkan wajah, sekaligus untuk mewajibkan wanita muslimah agar menutupinya, tidak terdapat dalam nash syariat manapun; baik secara jelas (sharahatan), melalui penunjukan (dilalatan), lewat proses penggalian (istinbathan), maupun melalui analogi (qiyasan). Artinya tidak ditemukan adanya illat syar’iyyah (alasan yang digali dari syariat). Yang ada hanyalah illat aqliyah (alasan yang hanya diambil dari proses rasionalisasi). Padahal illat aqliyah tidak ada nilainya di hadapan hukum syariat. Yang diakui hanyalah illat syar’iyyah, bukan yang lain. Walhasil, kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah tidak bisa dijadikan tolok ukur di dalam proses penetapan larangan untuk menampakkan wajah, sekaligus penetapan kewajiban untuk menutupinya. Sebab, ketetapan semacam ini tidak ditemukan dalam nash syariat.

Ketiga, terkait dengan kaidah berikut: Sarana yang dapat mengantarkan pada sesuatu yang haram adalah haram, Kaidah semacam ini tidak relevan dengan larangan untuk menampakkan wajah hanya karena takut munculnya fitnah. Sebab, kaidah ini mengharuskan adanya dua hal: (1) Sarana yang dapat mengantarkan pada sesuatu yang haram tersebut diduga kuat (ghalabah az zhan) memang dapat menghasilkan keharaman, artinya akibat yang bakal ditimbulkannya (baca: keharaman) adalah sesuatu yang pasti dan diduga kuat tidak akan meleset; (2) Keharaman yang ditetapkan itu memang telah dinyatakan secara jelas dengan nash, bukan dengan dilandasakan pada akal.

Dalam konteks ini, kedua aspek di atas tidak terdapat dalam topik tentang larangan untuk menampakkan wajah karena adanya kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah. Jika memang yang mereka katakan adalah kewajiban menutup wajah hanya karena adanya kekhawatiran munculnya fitnah –bukan karena adanya kepastian akan munculnya fitnah- berarti topik diseputar upaya menampakkan wajah karena khawatir akan adanya fitnah tidak relevan jika dikaitkan dengan kaidah di atas, yakni mengharamkan apa yang akan menyebabkan munculnya suatu keharaman. Dalam hal ini, harus diberi catatan bahwa, fitnah haram atas orang yang terfitnah (yakni pria yang terpesona karena memandang wanita-pen). Akan tetapi, bukan ini yang secara pasti menjadi topik dasar dalam masalah ini. Apalagi kekhawatiran akan munculnya fitnah tidak disebutkan sama sekali dalam nash manapun sebagai dalil bagi adanya pengharaman. Lebih dari itu, Allah swt. tidak mengharamkan fitnah itu sendiri atas orang yang membuat fitnah (dalam hal ini, wanita yang menampakkan wajahnya-pen) terhadap orang lain. Yang diharamkan adalah fitnah atas orang yang memandang wanita dengan pandangan yang akan menimbulkan fitnah bagi dirinya, bukan atas obyek yang dipandang. Dalilnya adalah hadits yang diriwayatkan oleh Imam Abu Dawud sebagai berikut:Suatu ketika, Fadhil Ibn Abbas membonceng Nabi saw.. Tiba-tiba, datanglah seorang wanita bernama Khats’amiyah hendak meminta pendapat. Fadhil lantas memandang wanita tersebut dan wanita itupun memandangnya. Karena itu, Rasulullah kemudian memalingkan wajah Fadhil dari wanita itu.

Artinya Rasulullah saw. memalingkan wajah Ibn Abbas dari wanita tadi. Dalam riwayat lain, redaksi dari potongan hadits tersebut adalah sebagai berikut: Oleh karena itu, Rasulullah saw. memalingkan wajah Fadhl ke arah yang lain. Riwayat tersebut juga diceritakan oleh Ali ibn Abi Thalib dengan ada tambahan redaksi: Abbas ra kemudian bertanya kepada Rasulullah saw., “Ya Rasulullah, mengapa anda memalingkan leher keponakan anda?” Rasulullah saw. menjawab, “Karena saya melihat seorang pemuda dan seorang pemudi yang tidak aman dari gangguan setan”.

Atas dasar ini, jelaslah bahwa Rasulullah saw. memalingkan wajah Fadhl dari Khuts’amiyah. Sebaliknya, beliau tidak memerintahkan Khuts’amiyah agar menutupi wajahnya, padahal wajahnya jelas terlihat. Seandainya fitnah itu diharamkan atas orang yang membuat fitnah (sebagaimana Khuts’amiyah-pen), maka Rasulullah pasti telah memerintahkan Khuts’amiyah untuk menutupi wajahnya, karena jelas sekali pandangan Fadhl kepada wanita itu telah menimbulkan fitnah (keterpesonaan) pada dirinya. Namun demikian, beliau tidak menyuruh Khuts’amiyah untuk menutupi wajahnya. Beliau malah memalingkan pandangan Fadhl. Kenyataan ini menunjukkan bahwa pengharaman tersebut ditujukan bagi orang yang melihat (pria), bukan bagi yang dilihat (wanita).

Atas dasar ini pula, pengharaman adanya fitnah pada diri seseorang karena memandang wanita sebetulnya tidak dinyatakan dalam satu nash pun yang menetapkan adanya keharaman atas wanita yang menimbulkan fitnah. Bahkan, nash yang ada justru menunjukkan tidak adanya keharaman fitnah tersebut atas wanita, sehingga –dengan sendirinya- apa yang dapat menimbulkan fitnah itu tidaklah haram, meskipun hal itu bersifat pasti. Mekipun demikian, Daulah Khilafah boleh saja menerapkan sesuatu kebijakan –sebagai upaya praktis dalam rangka mengurus umat- untuk menjauhkan seseorang dari pandangan yang dapat menimbulkan fitnah. Upaya ini dilakukan untuk menghindarkan sumber fitnah di tengah-tengah masyarakat, jika memang fitnah telah menyebar secara merata pada setiap individu yang ada. Kebijakan semacam ini pernah diterapkan oleh khalifah Umar ibn al Khattab terhadap Nashr ibn Hajjaj. Ia dipindahkan ke wilayah Bashrah karena banyak wanita terpikat oleh ketampanannya. Fenomena semacam ini bisa terjadi secara umum, baik pada pria maupun wanita.

Dengan demikian, pendapat bahwa wanita haram menampakkan wajahnya karena khawatir dapat memunculkan fitnah tidak bisa diterima, meskipun munculnya fitnah tersebut sudah diprediksikan pasti terjadi. Walhasil, kaidah yang berbunyi, “Al washilah ila al haram mahramah (sarana yang dapat mengantarkan pada suatu keharaman adalah haram pula)”, tidak relevan dalam masalah ini. Wallohu a'lam bisshowab.

1. She loves them for the sake of Allah :

This is a love untainted by any worldly interests or ulterior motives. True sisterly love is a relationship whose purity is derived from the light of Islamic guidance (Dr. Muhammad A. al-Hashimi). It is a bond that links a Muslims to her sister regardless of geographical origins, ethnicity, skin color, hair form, eye shape, or language. (It is) a bond based upon faith in Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala) Who is greater than all our little petty divisions. “The Believers are but a single brotherhood….” [Al-Hujuraat 49:10]

A love which is an expression of the sweetness of faith: “There are three things that whoever attains them will find the sweetness of faith: if Allah and His Messenger (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam)are dearer to him than anyone else; if he loves a person solely for the sake of Allah; if he would hate to return to kufr after Allah has rescued him from it, as much as he would hate be thrown into the Fire.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

So this is not love for the sake of status, notoriety, or fame. It is a love that requires a clean heart, a light heart, a soft and pliable heart.

In the hadeeth of Mu’adh reported by at-Tirmidhi, the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Allah said: ‘Those who love one another for My glory, will have minbars of light, and the Prophets and martyrs will wish that they had the same” [hasan saheeh hadeeth]

This kind of love is the only way to eliminate hatred, jealousy, and rivalry from peoples hearts.

2. She shows them kindness, faithfulness, and equity :
The importance of kindness is mentioned hundreds of times in the Qur'aan! Islam instills in its followers the characteristic of kindness and faithfulness towards one’s friends, including the parents of one’s friends. The seerah is filled with examples of kindness and faithfulness among the early believers. If you remember the story concerning our mother ‘Aaisha (radiallahu ‘anhaa) who used to become upset with Rasoolullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) because he used to extend himself to the friends of his late first wife, Khadijah (radiallahu ‘anhaa). He (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) spoke highly of Khadijah (radiallahu ‘anhaa) and sometimes he would slaughter a sheep and send a large portion to Khadijah’s friends.

3. She meets them with a warm, friendly, smiling face :
In Muslim it is reported our beloved Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Do not think little of any good deed, even if it is just greeting your brother with a cheerful countenance.”

The act of smiling actually stimulates the secretion of certain chemicals (endorphins) that increase our sense of well-being.

“Your smiling at your brother is an act of charity (sadaqah)” [reported by at-Tirmidhi who said it is hasan gharib)

4. She is sincere towards them
Sincerity is one of the most basic principles of Islam and a central foundation of the faith. Without sincerity, a sister’s faith is invalid and her Islam is worthless. When the first believers gave allegiance (bay’ah) to the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), they pledged their sincerity. This is confirmed by the statement of Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah (radiallahu ‘anhu): “I gave allegiance to the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) and pledged to observe regular prayer, to pay zakat and to be sincere towards every Muslim.” [Agreed upon]

Furthermore, our beloved Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “None of you truly believes until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself” [Agreed upon] It is impossible to do this without sincerity.

5. She does not forsake or abandon her sister(s) :
The religion that calls for love, continued contact, and mutual affection is also the religion (Islam) that has forbidden sisters in faith to hate or abandon one another. It is reported by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad: “No two people who love one another for the sake of Allah, or for the sake of Islam, will let the first minor offense of either of them come between them.”

This hadith and others tell us that prolonged estrangement from our sister is not acceptable. The longer the estrangement lasts (3 days or more) the greater the sin and the more severe is the punishment that will befall the two who are split by the dispute. Reconciliation among sisters-in-Islam is encouraged and the better of the two (disputing) Muslimahs is the first to give salaam. The Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “There should be no breaking off of ties, no turning away from one another, no hating one another, and no envying one another. Be brothers, as Allah has commanded you.” [Muslim]

The great Sahabi Abu Darda (radiallahu 'anhu) used to say: “Shall I not tell you about something that is better for you than charity and fasting? Reconcile between your brothers, for hatred diminishes reward.” (reported by al-Bukhari in Ad-Adab al-Mufrad)

6. She is tolerant and forgiving towards them :
Sometimes it seems so easy to become angry with our sisters in Islam about just about anything. However, the true Muslim restrains her anger and is quick to forgive her sister, and does not see any shame in doing so. Rather, she recognizes this as a good dead that can bring her closer to Allah and earn her His love which He bestows only on those who do good:

“…[those] who restrain anger and pardon (all) men – for Allah loves those who do good.” [Al-‘Imran 3:134]

7. She does not gossip about or backbite them :
The believing woman does not gossip about or backbite her sisters in Islam. She knows that gossip is haraam as the Qur’an says:

“…. Nor speak ill of each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, you would abhor it. But fear Allah: for Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.” [al-Hujuraat 49:12]

The believing woman restrains her tongue and speaks only good of her sister, remembering the words of the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam): “Do you know what gossip is? They said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘It is your saying about your brother something which he dislikes.” He was asked, ‘What do you think if what I say about my brother is true?’ He said, ‘If it is true then you have gossiped about him and if it not true then you have slandered him.” [Muslim]

Being two-faced is an aspect of this. In fact the two-faced person is regarded as being one of the worst people in the sight of Allah. Our beloved Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “You will find among the worst people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, the one who is two-faced, who approaches some people in one way and others in another.” [al-Bukhari & Muslim]

8. She avoids arguing with them, making hurtful jokes, and breaking promises :
It is reported by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad that our Prophet (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said: “Do not argue with your brother, do not joke excessively with him, do not make a promise to him then break it.”

Arguing leads to further misunderstanding, rigidity, and is an easy opening for Iblis (Shaitan); hurtful jokes often lead to hatred and loss of respect; and breaking promises upset people and destroys love. We need to learn to be able to “back off” to not have the final say, to sometimes just “agree to disagree” until the matter can be resolved by someone with more knowledge. The kind of posturing and gesticulation that poisons so many disagreements is leftover jahl (ignorance). We need to run away from this.

9. She is generous and self-sacrificing :
The Muslimah prefers friendship with a Muslim over the non-Muslim. The bond of common belief forms the foundation for generosity, a basic Islamic characteristic. We are entreated by Allah (subhaanahu wa ta’aalaa) to be

“… lowly [or humble] with the believers, mighty against the kafirun …” [al-Maidah 5:54]

10. She prays for her sisters in their absence :
The sincere Muslimah who truly likes for her sister what she likes for herself does not forget to pray for her sister in her absence. This is a practical demonstration of sisterly love and care. A sincere, pure prayer of this kind is the kind most quickly answered. It is reported by al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad that “The quickest prayer to be answered is a man’s supplication for his brother in his absence.”

11. She encourages her sisters in all that is pleasing to Allah

In His Name, the Most High

My Lord!
The Creator of the Universe.

Tonight,
My sleep has been hijacked
by troubling thoughts
So,
here I am
in complaint

My Creator.
You are a Witness
that I do not worship anyone
but You
You are also a Witness
to my dedication
and
loyalty
to Your Messenger and his family.

My Lord!
I will not dare to complain about creating me.
But my Lord, what wrong did my soul commit
so that I be deprived from meeting Your great messenger?!

What sin did I commit, so that I would be banned from talking to him?
Am I that bad, that I am barred from learning directly from him?
Am I that awful, that I had to be imprisoned in this timeline?
Only reading contradictory texts about him, here and there.
Listening about him in lectures, here and there.

What a pain You have inflicted me.
Every problem
has a solution.
Every pain
has a cure.
Every agony
has an end.

But not this one
This one has no solution or cure or an end
My Lord!

This pain of separation from Your greatest Mercy
This pain of distance from Your greatest creation
Will follow me to the grave.

What a tough luck!

The trees,
the birds,
the horses,
the camels
and even the dust of Medina
were more blessed than me
by having the great honor
of serving the Prophet directly

I would give up my life and anything that I value
for one moment, a fraction of a second, a flash of a sight
to see, to visit, to offer direct “salaams” upon him
Not in dreamland
Not in hereafter
But here, in this world

Your wisdom decided that
I stay in agony of separation from the ones I love.
Your wisdom dictates that
I be stuck here away from
Muhammad and his family
(countless peace and greatest salute upon them).

This complaint is not my fault.
Is it my fault that You have seeded the Love for them in my heart?
Is it my fault that I was born 1400 years later?
Is it my fault that it is impossible for me to meet them in person?
Is it my fault that no one understands this pain of mine?

Here they were: Ammar, Abu Zar, Bilal, Jabir, Salmaan, and so many others
Even Owais, who got a chance to at least walk on the same soil as the Prophet

Here I am, surrounded by my sins, pathetic weak faith,
Large number of talkers
Small number of doers

And a never-ending pain.

Just a complaint,
My Lord,
That I can never
for once
meet
The Great Mercy to Mankind
in person
in this world.

You are the most Wise.
I just shed tears
submit to this destiny
be grateful
That at least, You have illuminated my heart
by the Light of their love.

You are the most wise.
I submit to the destiny You have written for me.
But in tears of separation
it is
that I do so.

You are the Greatest of all, and the all Knowing.

CAUSE WE'RE NOT THEM....

Love Because Of Allah will make you feel that you don’t need to posses someone although your heart really wish to posses him/her.

The important thing is…. How you can keep him/her and yourself to still walking in His way with sincerely just because of Him, even with big heart pray for his/her happiness…..

Love because of Allah will never let you go astray…

When you look at him/her, then appear a love because of Him, so it will make you getting repair your self…..really….!!!

Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day there are signs for men who understand.

Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: Our Lord! Thou hast not created this in vain! Glory be to Thee; save us then from the chastisement of the fire:

Our Lord! surely whomsoever Thou makest enter the fire, him Thou hast indeed brought to disgrace, and there shall be no helpers for the unjust:

Our Lord! surely we have heard a preacher calling to the faith, saying: Believe in your Lord, so we did believe; Our Lord! forgive us therefore our faults, and cover our evil deeds and make us die with the righteous.

Our Lord! and grant us what Thou hast promised us by Thy apostles; and disgrace us not on the day of resurrection; surely Thou dost not fail to perform the promise.

So their Lord accepted their prayer: That I will not waste the work of a worker among you, whether male or female, the one of you being from the other; they, therefore, who fled and were turned out of their homes and persecuted in My way and who fought and were slain, I will most certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will most certainly make them enter gardens beneath which rivers flow; a reward from Allah, and with Allah is yet better reward.

MUS’AB BIN ‘UMAIR

(May Allah be pleased with him)

Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (May Allah be pleased with him) was a very handsome young man. He was the son of ‘Umair’ a wealthy person. He brought up his son in quite a luxurious fashion. Mus‘ab enjoyed the best of food, finest dresses and the best perfumes. Whenever Mus‘ab passed through the streets, dressed in precious clothes and profusely perfumed, the sweet smell scented the atmosphere all around and the people gazed at him with amazement and appreciation. His beauty and charm was the talk of the town. Every person knew that Mus‘ab’s parents were bringing up their son with great affection and care. Whenever the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) talked of him, he said

“There is nobody more handsome in Mecca than Mus‘ab. There is no person in the city better clothed and fed than Mus‘ab. There is no child brought up with mote affection and love than him.”

Due to his charming personality and being a lovely son of wealthy parents, every one- your or old- had a great regard for him. When he embraced Islam he was given a respectable place in Muslim society. But it was not due to his beauty, charm, good dress, good manners or wealth, but due to his

piety and fear of God. When he embraced Islam, he was put to severe hardships torture. The beauty and charm of his person faded. He was also deprived of the affection and care of his parents. But his virtues and piety won the appreciation of Allah and His Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). In his pursuit for winning the favour of Allah and his His Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), Mus‘ab cared neither for good food, nor good

dress. He was no more inclined towards costly cosmetics and perfumes; instead he devoted himself whole heartedly to serve the noble cause of Islam.

Mus‘ab accepted Islam at a time when life had been made unbearable for Muslims. He was turned out

of his home. Nobody talked to him. He was social boycotted. He had to suffer countless miseries. This pampered young man embraced Islam at a time when those who believed in Islam were refused food and water and were thrown in dark prison cells. Many bloodthirsty tyrants not satisfied with the infliction of pain and injury, often murdered their Muslim victims. There were other hardhearted fellows who had invented various forms of torments, to inflict on poor Muslims. They enjoyed the writhing and wriggling of their Muslim prisoners. A Muslim thrown flat on the burning Arabian sand in the mid-day sun with very heavy stones placed his breast, or forcibly stretched on red hot coals to the enjoyment of the spectators, was an every day scene in Mecca.

Hadrat Mus‘ab accepted Islam during that difficult period. One day a non believer saw him offering prayers. He at once informed his parents who turned hostile to their son. All the affection of his mother vanished. Al the love and care of his father changed into anger and grief. They admonished him. But, when they knew that he was firm, they tied him with ropes and threw him in a dark cell. He was kept in prison for a long time, but his belief in Islam was so deep that the torment of prison did not change his mind. He sacrificed everything and remained calm and quiet. When the Muslims were ordered to migrate to Abyssinia, this Youngman, brought up like a Prince, also went to Abyssinia, along with the other devotees of Allah. When he returned from Abyssinia, people saw in him a different person- all the luster and gaiety was gone. He who would have scoffed at the most precious raiment, was wearing a dress made of coarse, worn-out blanket. The spectacle inspired amazement, and awe among the onlookers. His mother, too, pitied her son’s condition and repented of the harsh treatment, she had shown to him.

Meanwhile, Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair presented himself to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in such a condition that he had only a piece of skin with patches here and there to cover his body. When the Companions of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) saw this, they hung their heads in awe. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) observed, “Al-hamd-o-Lillah ! Now the condition of the world and worldly people should change. This is the young man who had no equal in Mecca in the luxurious style in which he was brought up. But the regard for virtue and love for Allah and his Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) have made him indifferent to all worldly pleasures.”

During this period many people of Medina had accepted Islam. They requested the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to send them a preacher for teaching them the fundamentals of Islam. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) selected Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair for this purpose ; he gave him some instructions and sent him to Medina. Later events showed that mus‘ab bin ‘Umair proved himself worthy of the confidence reposed in him. On reaching Medina Hadrat Mus‘ab begant to perform the duty entrusted to him with all the sagaci6ty necessary for a preacher. He went from door to door to convince the people for the message of Islam. Initially he talked to each person in terms which that person could understand, and then presented to him the message of Islam at the right moment. He recited before the people selected verses of the Holy Qur’an, which had a profound effect on their minds. He treated his visitors very politely. He had a natural gift for soft speech and people who approached him instantly became his friends. An incident is related below, as an example:

One day Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair was explaining some Islamic precepts to a group of Muslims. By chance elite of Medina, Sa ‘ad bin ma ‘az happened to come there. He had heard about Mus‘ab bin “Umair’s preaching for Islam and was very angry with him. He said to an influential person, Usaid bin Huzair, “Turn this preacher of Islam out of your neighborhood. He has turned many persons away from the path of their ancestral faith. If I was not a relation of SA‘ad ( with who Mus‘ab was staying), I would not have asked you to do that, but would have done it myself.” Usaid at once took his spear and went to Sa ‘ad’s house. He called both of them and said furiously, “Who has called you here to lead the people astray? If your lives are dear to you, go away from this place at once.”

To this Hadrat Mus‘ab replied very gently, “Please sit down and listen to us calmly. If you like what we say, then you may accept it otherwise we shall leave this place.” Us‘ad stuck his spear in the ground and sat down to listen to what Mus ‘ab recited some verses of the Holy Qur‘an. He explained to the audience the identity of Allah as the Creator, the Master and the Merciful, in such an impressive manner that in a short time Usaid was filled with the light of fidelity and he exclaimed, “What an excellent faith, How can I embrace Islam? After that he recited the Kalima and embraced Islam.

After some time Sa ‘ad bin Mu‘az also arrived there mad with rage. But, he too was softened like wax by the sublime eloquence of Hadrath Mus‘ab, and before he left he had already recited the Kalima about the Oneness of Allah and become a Muslim. Soon after all the inhabitants of Medina except a few, accepted Islam. It was in Medina too that Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair did a remarkable work which shows his intelligence and tact in propagating the call of Islam. When the number is Muslims increased in Medina, he organized them in a body and requested permission of the Prophet (peace be upon him) to lay the foundation of Friday prayers.

When the permission of Friday prayers was granted his first talks was to deliver a very impressive address. Then he led the congregational Friday prayers with great reverence. In this way Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair had the honour of founding the Friday prayers. True, when Allah is please with a person. He entrusts him with such noble works. The successes which by the grace of Allah Hadrat Mus‘ab achieved at Medina were constantly reported to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). When Mus‘ab’s mission had been fully acomplished he led a group of Muslims to Mecca to bring the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to Medina. On arrival at Mecca the first thing which Hadrat Mus‘ab did was to approach the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) to give him a full report of the success of his mission. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was very pleased with Mus‘ab’a account. A true Muslim (Momin) does not require anything else but the pleasure of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) of Allah.

Hadrat Mus‘ab’s mother learnt that her son had returned home at last; and that he was staying with

someone else. She felt annoyed and sent him word: “My son! You have returned to a town, in which I reside. But woe to me! You have not come to see me!” The reply which Hadrat Mus‘ab sent to his mother shows his sincere devotion to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him). He said, “I will not see anybody before I have paid homage to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)".

The account of Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (peace be upon him) give above presents before ‘us an exemplary proof of the great love he had for Islam and the pains he took in presenting Islam to the non-believers. He sacrificed everything he possessed for the sake of Islam-his charm and beauty, his wealth and worldly belongings, his luxurious style of living and shed his attachment to his parents, his home- land, his people and his own country. In short everything which was dear to him, was sacrificed by him for Islam. But this chapter of the history of Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) will remain incomplete without an account of his death.

It may be recollected that Hadrat Mus‘ab bin ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) was not only very handsome, he did not only possess the qualities of submission and sacrifice, and he was not only a master of high intelligence and good eloquence, but he was also a gallant soldier, a fearless warrior and an able General. It was because of his gallantry that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) had entrusted him with the charge of the highest banner of war, in the battle of Badr. At the battle of Uhud also he got the rare honor of holding the Muslim banner. The way in which the high office of holding the war banner was discharged in the two battles by this great devotee of Islam may be judged from the events of the Battle of Uhud.

In the battle of Uhud it so happened that the battle was lost for a while by a casual mistake of the

Muslims. The non-believers of Mecca attacked the Muslims in the rear and thus disorganized the Muslim army. At that critical time Hadrat Mus‘ab (Allah be pleased with him) kept the Islamic banner flying high. He attacked the forces of the enemy all alone. He could not think of acting against the order of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and making a retreat. At that time many non-believers attacked the Muslim warrior simultaneously and surrounded him. There were countless attacks on him by sword and spear.

With great valour he with stood the attack. He bore the cuts of the enemy on his breast, but held the Islamic banner in his hands firmly. During this attack one of the enemies stepped forward and cut off his right hand with one stroke of the sword. The hand fell on the ground. The banner was about to fall when he transferred it to his left hand. The enemy now took another chance and struck a second blow of sword on his left hand. Still Hadrat Mus‘ab did not lose courage; he did not allow the banner to fall down; he held it by his breast, within the circle of his arms. The enemy was irritated to see such intrepid devotion.

In savage fury, he threw the sword on the ground and flung a spear at the breast of mus‘ab. The pointed end of the blade pierced the chest, broke and remained embedded there. The great hero, thus fell to the ground reciting the following Qur’anic verse : Quranic Ayat (Al Imran)

Wa ma Muhammad-dun illa rasulun qad khalat min qablehil rusul). Meaning: “And Muhammad (peace be upon him) is only a prophet of Allah. Many other Prophets have passed away before him.

When the keeper of Islamic banner fell, the banner fluttered in the air. Seeing this Abul Room bin ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him), brother of the martyr, moved forward and took over the banner. He protected its honour till the last.

When the battle came to an end the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) stood by the dead body of

Mus‘ab ibn ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) and recited the verse: Ayat Al Ahzab

(Minal momeneena rejalun sadqu ma ‘ahadullaha ‘ alaihe) Meaning : “There are some persone among the devoted Muslims (momeneen) who kept ther promise made to Allah.”

Then the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) addressed the dead body thus:-

“When I saw you for the first time in Mecca there was nobody more handsome and well-dressed than you. But, I see that today your hair is uncombed and only a sheet of clothe covers your body!”

The martyrs of Uhud could not get proper shrouds because in those days Muslims were poor and lacked money. Hadrat Mus ‘ab bin ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) had only a sheet of cloth over his body; if the head was covered, the feet were bare and when the feet were covered the head was left bare. At last his head was covered and the feet were covered with grass. Such was the shroud of Hadrat Mus ‘ab bin ‘Umair (Allah be pleased with him) - the great martyr of the Muslim nation. Subhanallah.....

I'M TOO BUSY!!!!!!!!

I'm Too Busy!

Everyday as I wake up at dawn
My mind start working the moment I yawn
There were many things to do, O dear!
That's why I hastily did my Subuh prayer
I didn't have the time to sit longer to praise the Lord
To me rushing out after prayer is nothing odd...
Since school, I had been busy every minute
Completing my tutorials and handing it in
My ECAs took up most of my time always
No time did I have to Allah to pray
Too many things to do and zikr is rare
For Allah, I really had no time to spare...

When I grew up and started my career
Working all day to secure my future
When I reached home, I prefered to have fun
I chatted on the phone but I didn't read the Quran
I spent too much time surfing the Internet
Sad to say, my faith was falling flat...

The only time I have left is weekends
During which I prefer window shopping with friends
I couldn't spare time to go to the mosque
I'm too busy, that's the BIG EXCUSE...

I did my five prayers but did so quickly
After prayer, I didn't sit longer to reflect quietly
I didn't have time to help the needy ones
I was loaded with work as my precious time runs

No time at all to visit a sick Muslim friend
To orphans and elderly, I hardly lent a hand
I'm too busy to do community service
When there were gatherings, I helped the least

My life was already full of stress
So I didn't counsel a Muslim in distress
I didn't spend much time with my family
Because I thought, doing so is a waste of time...

No time to share with non-Muslim about Islam
Even though I know, inviting causes no harm
No time to do Sunnah prayers at all
All these contribute to my imaan's fall...

I'm busy here and busy there
I've no time at all, that's all I care
I went for religious lessons, just once in awhile
'Cause i'm too busy making a pile...

I worked all day and I slept all night
Too tired for Tahajjud and it seemed not right
To me, earning a living was already tough
So I only did basic deeds but that's not enough...

No time at all, to admire God's creation
No time to praise Allah and seek His Compassion
Although I know how short is my life
For Islam, I really didn't strive...

Finally the day comes, when the Lord calls for me
And I stood before Him with my Life's History

I feel so guilty because I should have prayed more
Isn't that what a Muslim lives for?
To thank Allah and do more good deeds
And the Quran is for us all to read...

Now at Judgement Day, I'm starting to fret
I've wasted my life but it's too late to regret
My entry to Paradise depend on my good behaviour
But i've not done enough nor did proper prayer

My "good deed book" is given from my right
An angel opened my "book" and read out my plight.
Then the angel chided me...

"O You Muslim servant, you are the one,
Who is given enough time, yet not much is done
Do you know that your faith is loose?
Saying "no time" is only an excuse.
Your "good deed book" should be filled up more
With all the good work you stood up for...

Hence, I only recorded those little good deeds
As I say this, I know your eyes will mist...
I was about to write some more, you see
But I did not have, THE TIME to list"...

The Muslim Women's Ideal Character :)

THE MUSLIM WOMEN'S IDEAL CHARACTER

n the Qur'an, Allah informs us how belief benefits a woman:

Do not marry women who associate [others with Allah] until they believe. A slave girl who is one of the believers is better for you than a woman who associates [others with Allah], even though she may attract you. And do not marry men who associate [others with Allah] until they believe. A slave who is one of the believers is better for you than a man who associates [others with Allah], even though he may attract you. Such people call you to the Fire, whereas Allah calls you, with His permission, to the Garden and forgiveness. He makes His Signs clear to people so that, hopefully, they will pay heed. (Surat al-Baqara: 221)

Allah reveals that belief, fear and respect of Allah, and Islamic morality are the foremost causes of the believers' strength of character and virtue. Belief makes all of a person's qualities meaningful. In addition, the Qur'an's morality helps women, and everyone else, to acquire a most strong, solid, and virtuous character. As Allah revealed in the verse, "No indeed! We have given them that by which they are remembered [i.e. their honor, eminence and dignity]" (Surat al-Mu'minun: 71), this morality gives people their dignity and honor. Therefore, women who live by this morality will be respected and enjoy their deserved honor and dignity.

As we mentioned earlier, Allah has not determined separate characters for men and women and therefore calls on all people to abide by one Muslim character. Therefore, Muslims fear and respect Allah, seek His good pleasure, and seek only to win the Hereafter, in the full knowledge that this worldly life is temporary and that he or she will die one day.

All Muslims always strive to live by the Qur'an's morality. Women who do so are free from all of the character defects, weaknesses, and prejudices found among unbelievers. Instead, they develop a strong character based on their belief. Believers disregard the suggestions and criticisms of their society, family, or friends and live according to the Qur'an's values and morality.

Maryam is one of the best role models for such women, for during all of the difficult trials that she underwent at the hands of her unbelieving society, she always showed her strength of character and integrity. And, the strength that she derived from her belief in Allah, her sincere submission to Him, and her constant adherence to Islam's values enabled her to preserve her honor and integrity. In fact, she was noted for these qualities among people.

In the coming pages, we will explore the basics of a woman's ideal character and how much it differs from the character of unbelieving women.

Muslim Women Submit to God

Muslim women believe in Allah with a true heart, submit completely to Him, are aware that there is no other deity, that He is the Lord of every being and thing, and that He is All-Powerful. Therefore, she fears and respects only Him and seeks to win only His good pleasure. She worships only Him, accepts only Him as her closest friend, and seeks only His help. She also knows that only He can direct good and bad toward her, and so lives in the full knowledge that she is dependent on Him. She knows that He keeps her alive, provides and cares for her, and protects and guards her. For these reasons, she has no expectations of other people.

She believes in Allah without the slightest doubt in her heart for her whole life, never losing heart or belief regardless of the circumstances. She knows how to be grateful and content with her closeness to Him both when her life is good and when she is undergoing difficulties. She is in a state of constant submission, certain of our Lord's love, compassion, forgiveness, and providence.

When she encounters a problem, she knows that Allah has provided a solution in the Qur'an, and that what matters most is her continued sincere love, submission, and trust in Allah. She is certain of Allah's promise that He creates everything according to His justice and with wisdom and goodness.

Even if her problems seem to go on forever, she never surrenders to hopelessness or worries when His help will come. Content with what He has sent her way, she maintains her patience and submission, knowing that something good will come out of it. She remembers what the Qur'an says about those who abandon their belief in such times. In addition, she recites "My Lord is with me and will guide me" (Surat ash-Shu'ara': 62), just as the Prophets did when faced with hardship. Throughout her life, her profound faith enables her to see Allah's compassion, closeness, love, help, and friendship at all times.

This superior character becomes even more distinctive when compared with that of unbelieving women. Some unbelieving women do not show the appropriate degree of submission in their encounters, because they ignore the fact that Allah creates everything and inserts much wisdom and goodness hidden therein. One of the best-known characteristics of such women is their impatience, lack of determination, panic, and throwing tantrums when experiencing various hardships.

For this reason, and to save themselves the hassle, men often try to keep women away from potentially troublesome situations. Movies and novels are full of such stories. Since they do not place their trust in Allah and do not submit to Him, they cannot find the patience and resolution to endure hard times. In fact, their strength is in direct proportion to the size of the gain they can expect from working through these difficulties.

Believing women derive their strength from their belief and their determination to win Allah's good pleasure. Therefore, their resistance can be quite powerful. The Qur'an reveals this truth in the following verse: "Allah's guidance, that is true guidance. We are commanded to submit as Muslims to the Lord of all the worlds" (Surat al-An'am: 71). Allah gives good news to those who submit to Him:

Those who submit themselves completely to Allah and do good have grasped the Firmest Handhold. The end result of all affairs is with Allah. (Surah Luqman: 22)

Not so! All who submit themselves completely to Allah and are good-doers will find their reward with their Lord. They will feel no fear and will know no sorrow. (Surat al-Baqara: 112)

The Muslim Women, the Qur'an, and the Hadiths

As is the case with all believers, a Muslim woman's sole sources of guidance are the Qur'an and the sunnah (example) of our Prophet (saas). She shapes her personality, character, lifestyle, ideals, desires, behavior, and morality according to these two sources. By asking "Do they then seek the judgment of the Time of Ignorance? Who could be better at giving judgment than Allah for people with certainty?" (Surat al-Ma'ida: 50), Allah proclaims that the most correct and best judgments are contained in the Qur'an. Moreover,

... We have sent down the Book to you making all things clear and as guidance, and mercy and good news, for the Muslims. (Surat an-Nahl: 89)

Our Prophet (saas) said: "Verily, I have left among you the Book of Allah and the sunnah (example) of His Apostle. If you hold fast to them, you shall never go astray."21 With these words, he reminded Muslims that the most important guidance is the Qur'an and his sunnah.

When looking at an unbelieving society's stereotypical ideas of women, we notice immediately that they act according to their whims or instincts. The conditioning they receive from childhood onward about the ideal woman's character become almost their sole source of guidance. Given that the women in their immediate environment act and speak in the same way, that women portrayed in films and novels display the same character, that people seem to agree on what a woman's character should be, their character is a habitual one. Thus, it is easy to predict how they will respond in certain situations, what decisions they will reach, how they will behave, and even what they will say.

On the other hand, Muslim women always react correctly, make the right decisions, and obtain the best results because they are guided by the Qur'an and the Prophet's (saas) sunnah. Besides, they do not experience the unhappiness and discontent that unbelieving women do. As the following verse reveals, Muslim men and women lead a happy life, as promised by Allah: "Anyone who acts rightly, male or female, being a believer, We will give them a good life and recompense them according to the best of what they did" (Surat an-Nahl: 97).

Muslim Women Have Great Ideals

One of the unbelievers' most misguided character traits is the restrictions that they placed on people's ideals, thoughts, and lifestyle. In the case of women, society tells them that they have certain duties and responsibilities that they are expected to fulfill to the best of their ability. Usually, they are not encouraged to acquire different ideals or develop their personalities. Only when women become aware of this reality do they begin to perceive the need to seek greater ideals, widen their horizon, and develop their personalities.

Primarily, women are expected to provide for and cater to their families' needs and raise their children. Otherwise, they focus on themselves, according to the conditioning they received when young. They concentrate on their physical appearance, hair style, make-up, clothing and fashion in general; keeping their homes clean; and talking with their friends. While there is nothing wrong with such activities, it is wrong to limit their lives just to these tasks without even knowing why this is so.

Allah created men and women for a purpose and revealed their responsibilities in the Qur'an. Most importantly, each woman is responsible to our Lord, for He created her, gave her life, protected and watched over her, and provided for her. Men and women are required to lead the moral life prescribed by Allah, worship and serve Him, and to win His good pleasure. They are required to tell people who are far from the happy and contented life of following the Qur'an's values about Islam's values and to make a genuine effort to help them draw closer to Allah's pleasure, mercy, and Paradise. They must strive to save people from negative frames of mind, and from suffering under the influence of the chaos and disorder, all of which are presented by Satan and thus are devoid of true love, respect, and friendship.

All believers are obliged to help and guide those who are weak and distressed to His path:

What reason could you have for not fighting in the Way of Allah-for those men, women, and children who are oppressed and say: "Our Lord, take us out of this city whose inhabitants are wrongdoers! Give us a protector from You! Give us a helper from You!?" (Surat an-Nisa': 75)

Allah further reminds Muslims that they are obliged to assist orphans, people who are stranded, and other needy people:

Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him. Be good to your parents and relatives, orphans and the very poor, neighbors who are related to you and neighbors who are not related to you, and companions, travelers, and your servants. Allah does not love anyone vain or boastful. (Surat an-Nisa': 36)

A Muslim woman is aware of all these responsibilities and so does not focus only on herself. Rather, she does her best to solve the problems around the world, such as helping people who are suffering, fighting infectious diseases, working with children displaced or orphaned by war and conflict, and taking care of the elderly and other women as if they were her own problems.

She gives her full attention to every matter in her daily life, because she knows that the truly important thing is to win Allah's good pleasure, live the Qur'an's morality, and spread this morality in order to bring true contentment and happiness to all others. For this reason, she acts in the knowledge that what she encounters each day is not so important when put into the overall context of what she was created to do.

Muslim Women Are Dignified

... And the soul and what proportioned and inspired it with depravity or heedfulness; he who purifies it has succeeded, he who covers it up has failed. (Surat ash-Shams: 7-10)

The above verses warn people about the selfish ego that, when not brought under control, will lead them to limitless evil. A person's fear and respect of Allah, as well as his or her belief in the Hereafter, gives each person the strength and reason to resist these temptations.

Without this awareness, people will follow their desires and not worry about their meeting with Allah in the Hereafter, where they will be held accountable for their deeds. If his ego demands anger, jealousy, or ill-treatment of someone else, he will indulge it. If her selfish ego encourages her to vent her anger or jealous frustration with insinuations, mockery, slander, lies, conspiracies, or hypocritical behavior, she will oblige it without giving it a second thought. Such people will commit all of these sins without reservation, because they believe that they will never have to account for their deeds.

Allah, however, reveals that all of these activities are unconstrained evils called for by the selfish ego. When people act on these impulses, things just get worse. People who cannot control their emotions, even when they know that what they are doing is wrong, show that they are both weak and ignore their conscience. In other words, they seem to grow smaller. It is debasing to be unable to act maturely or respond rationally when their selfish egos suggest otherwise. As Allah reveals, the dignifying and rightful response to such evil suggestions is to ignore them and act conscientiously. This character trait needs to be worked on, for eventually it will earn other people's respect and love and raise the person's ranks in His eyes, as well as in the eyes of other people.

Muslim women have enough dignity and character to reject such debasing behavior for small gains. Allah informs us of the conspiring nature of unbelieving women: "He saw the shirt torn at the back and said: 'The source of this is women's deviousness. Without a doubt your guile is very great'" (Surah Yusuf: 28). Unbelieving women often try to resolve situations by conspiring, intriguing, or lying instead of seeking rational solutions. Indulging Satan's suggestions, they fall back on hypocrisy, cowardice, or devious methods. Believing women, on the other hand, resolve their problems by honesty, openness, and sincerity, for their awareness of Allah totally removes them from such inappropriate behavior.

Unbelieving women also are characterized by envy. Allah mentions envious people and warns others about their evil: "Say: 'I seek refuge with the Lord of Daybreak, from the evil of what He has created and from the evil of the darkness when it gathers, and from the evil of women who blow on knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies'" (Surat al-Falaq: 1-5). Some unbelieving women are prone to such behavior, which causes distrust, tantrums, broken relationships, and endless arguments, all of which result in an unfulfilled and unhappy life. In addition, they cause great suffering and damage to themselves and to those around them. Believing women, however, will disregard this aspect of human ego, knowing that it leads to great losses in this life as well as in the next.

Mockery is another character defect of unbelieving women. In the following verse Allah warns them against such behavior: "O you who believe! People should not ridicule others who may be better than themselves; nor should any women ridicule other women who may be better than themselves. And do not find fault with one another or insult each other with derogatory nicknames" (Surat al-Hujurat: 11).

Those women who are shaped by the unbelief that rules their societies do not hesitate to ridicule people for their shortcomings or to mock others, because they do not think of the Hereafter. They do not consider this behavior as wrong, but rather as a kind of humor. Often this mockery is not even verbal, but is expressed by making faces, rolling one's eyes, imitating their mannerisms, or whispering about them. Believing women shun such activities, because they know that Allah requires them to live according to the Qur'an's morality.

In another verse, Allah reminds people not to speculate or gossip about others: "O you who believe! Avoid most suspicion. Indeed, some suspicion is a crime. Do not spy and do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat his brother's dead flesh? No, you would hate it. And have fear of Allah. Allah is Ever-Returning, Most Merciful" (Surat al-Hujurat: 12).

Believing women live dignified lives. Instead of mocking others, they try to help. They compliment people who are successful, instead of succumbing to envy and gossip. And, when in the company of unbelieving people who might somehow offend them, they do not compromise their integrity or dignity.

Muslim Women Have a Strong Character and Willpower

The values of unbelief usually identify power with such things as money, fame, prestige, or status, for each of them is believed to confer power on that particular person. In fact, even one who acquires the patronage of such a person considers himself or herself to be powerful. In reality, however, power based on this world's impermanent values can disappear just as quickly as it appeared.

Muslims derive their power from their faith, and so their power never changes. This is an important factor in the character of Muslim women, and Allah describes it in the following terms:

O you who believe! If any of you renounce your religion, Allah will bring forward a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble to the believers, fierce to the unbelievers, who strive in the Way of Allah and do not fear the blame of any censurer. That is the unbounded favor of Allah, which He gives to whoever He wills. Allah is Boundless, All-Knowing. (Surat al-Ma'ida: 54)

Another important Islamic character trait revealed here is the believers' strong personality, which can withstand the criticism of people. Muslims know very well that all Prophets were accused and persecuted, made to suffer and forced to emigrate, or even killed. Nevertheless, these Prophets are the believers' role models, due to their strong, enduring, and solid personalities, as well as their patience and determination.

As Allah reveals, Muslims know that they will be tested in this life through hardship, suffering, and insulting words: "You will be tested in your wealth and in yourselves, and you will hear many abusive words from those given the Book before you and from those who associate [others with Allah]. But if you are steadfast and guard against evil, that is the most resolute course to take" (Surah Al 'Imran: 186). They will regard all such events as opportunities to prove their faith in Allah, their surrender and loyalty to Him, and will endure them with determination and patience.

They never show the weaknesses of unbelieving women. No one's insults, rude behavior, or criticism causes them to lose heart or become weak, and they consider it beneath their dignity to respond with an emotional display of hurt or being upset. Whatever happens, they trust in Allah and keep their peace of mind, knowing that Allah is ever Just and All-Knowing, and that "they will not be wronged by so much as the smallest speck" (Surat an-Nisa': 49). They surrender to Allah, knowing that He will expose any injustice, and so do not worry about any unfounded accusation.

Some unbelieving women consider strength and willpower to be male characteristics, out of the mistaken belief that only men have to show strength and determination for themselves, as well as for the women in their charge, in the face of adversity. Thus, they consider it to be in their best interest to surrender to men's intellect, willpower, and strength. Especially when encountering trouble and difficulty, they lose whatever little strength and willpower they have and panic, and thus give themselves up to irrational and confused behavior.

This pale and weak personality leads unbelieving women to pay too much attention to what other people think about them. Often, they knowingly do something wrong just to impress others or to win a respectable place among them. Likewise, if they are criticized, they feel belittled and disliked, and so feel devastated. Not understanding that what matters is their value in Allah's presence, they only seek the approval of people and end up being upset and distraught, thinking that all they ever do is a waste. As a result, they become depressed and lose their strength, willpower, and courage.

But Muslim women never stagger because of people's criticism. Given that they measure themselves by the yardstick of the Qur'an, which spells out clearly what is right and what is wrong, they strive to live up to the Qur'anic morality. If they are criticized for doing so, they become even more determined and stronger in their pursuit of His good pleasure, which is the highest goal to pursue. Believing that only the Qur'an's morality gives them any value in this world and the next, they do not care what other people think of them. Even if they are all alone, they do not follow the majority but remain independent. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, when discussing this matter, stated that the people's approval has no significance for those who live in ways designed to win His good pleasure:

The Divine assent is sufficient. If He is your beloved, then everything is your beloved. If He is not your beloved, then the applause of the entire world is utterly worthless.22

You should seek Divine pleasure in your actions. If Almighty Allah is pleased, it is of no importance even should the whole world be displeased. If He accepts an action and everyone else rejects it, it has no effect. Once His pleasure has been gained and He has accepted an action, even if you do not ask it of Him, should He wish it and His wisdom require it, He will make others accept it. He will make them consent to it, too. For this reason, the sole aim in this service should be the direct seeking of Divine pleasure.23

O lower self, if you acquired your Creator's assent with your piety and devotion, then it shall be sufficient and there shall be no need to look for people's assent. If the people agree and accept on Allah's behalf, then it is good. If they act to gain worldly blessings, then it shall be utterly worthless. Because they are weak servants, just like you...24

Muslim Women Are Balanced and Measured

People who live by their own self-made rules can easily make compromises when they deem it in their best interests to do so. No paramount guiding principle shapes their lives and gives permanence to their personalities. Therefore, from time to time, their personalities show signs of change and cannot be considered consistent.

The defining factor is usually their selfish ego, for Allah reveals that all people have been created with egotistic tendencies. If people are ruled by their ego, all of their behavior will be determined accordingly. This will have an impact on their personality's balance, consistency, and stability. For example, they can become angry, emotional, cross, or envious at a moment's notice and then reflect it in their behavior. Such people constantly surprise others with their unexpected reactions, and so evoke distrust and uncertainty.

Such character traits are found among unbelieving women. Since they are far removed from the Qur'an's values, they surrender to the stereotyped emotions of women and let their lives be determined by this behavior. Eventually, this leads them to irrational and imbalanced behavior.

Believing women, since they read the Qur'an, know that their ego always tempts them toward wickedness and that Satan will try to persuade them to indulge in imbalanced and irrational behavior and to act on their instincts. In many verses, He reminds people that those who accept the Qur'an's guidance and follow the voice of their conscience will develop an ideal personality and become distinguished in both worlds.

Muslim women acquire this strong and superior personality by following the path shown by Allah. This involves conforming their responses to Islam's values in order to develop a measured and balanced personality. Their actions, viewpoints, and logic will never surprise other people, for their personalities will always reflect the stability flowing from the Qur'an's morality. In other words, they will have reliable personalities, unlike all unbelieving women.

Muslim Women Are Not Emotional

Unbelievers think that being emotional is an important part of the human character. According to this view, the resulting behavior is a feeling that needs to be experienced. Such behavioral defects as being angry, upset, and introverted, or weeping, complaining, and apathy, are encouraged, for they supposedly come from the heart. This view is completely wrong. In unbelieving societies, such emotionalism, especially that seen in women, is responsible for a weak personality. And, as we saw above, people with weak personalities are, to a great extent, unable to think rationally or logically and thus cannot make appropriate decisions.

Muslim women know the selfish ego's qualities and how to fight them, for their personalities and lives are defined by the Qur'an. They know that emotionalism clouds the mind, prevents reality from being seen as it is, and causes weakness and irresolution. In addition, they are very well aware that such stereotypical qualities as being sentimental, upset, introverted, angry, and envious are not consistent with the believers' character, because Allah does not like it and tells Muslims to refrain from it.

These behavioral defects issue from flawed beliefs and the lack of sufficient awareness of certain facts. People who easily surrender to them have either forgotten or else continue to deny the fact that Allah is All-Powerful; creates everything according to His wisdom, justice, and goodness; creates whatever He wills; and answers all prayers.

Genuine surrender and dedication to Him, as well as knowing that He controls everything, results in seeing goodness in everything and prevents inappropriate emotion-based behavior. Muslim women guard themselves against all such behavioral defects out of their strong love, and fear and respect of Allah. They seek to be role models of Islamic behavior, personality, and high morality, as the following verse reveals: "Those who say: 'Our Lord, give us joy in our wives and children and make us a good example for those who guard against evil'" (Surat al-Furqan: 74). Thus, they never give way to depression or emotionalism.

Avoiding these non-Islamic character traits, they acquire a strong personality in order to serve as examples to other women and act in full awareness of this responsibility. By cleansing their ego from wickedness, they find generosity and contentment in both worlds and thus live happy lives: "It is the people who are safeguarded from the avarice of their own selves who are successful" (Surat al-Hashr: 9).

Muslim Women Have a Genuine and Natural Personality

Sincerity means to be the same in every situation; to have one's heart reflect its feelings as they are; and to be honest, open, and clear. In other words, it consists of fully and honestly revealing one's personality and thoughts without seeking any gain for doing so. An important feature of sincerity is the impossibility of imitating in one's life what goes on in one's heart. A sincere person's behavior comes from the heart, is natural, and creates a very positive and lasting impression on other people. A genuine person's looks, conversation, style, and body language are natural and influential.

However, many people are unaware of sincerity's power and effect and so look for it elsewhere. Some people resort to pretence, hoping to discover what behavior or way of thinking will please the other people. Since all people have different character traits, these insincere people develop a suitable personality for each person they want to influence, behave differently, and try to appear as if they were representing different thoughts. But since this insincere approach forces people into hypocrisy, it does not have the desired effect and eventually creates an atmosphere of repulsion, coldness, and distance. In addition, such people make others nervous, for they never know what to expect.

Allah tells us about such people:

Allah has made a metaphor for them of a man owned by several partners in dispute with one another, and another man wholly owned by a single man. Are they the same? Praise be to Allah! The fact is that most of them do not know. (Surat az-Zumar: 29)

Unbelievers consider pretence a legitimate behavior, because they do not reflect sufficiently upon the consequences of insincerity toward Allah and other people. Pretence is especially common among unbelieving women, for some of them appear to like and take an interest in others, whom they neither respect nor like, but backbite nevertheless because of some common interests that they may have. They can lie and cheat one another without a second thought or, by concealing their antipathy, create the opposite impression. Likewise, they can conceal these feelings and try to fool the people they value and like very much.

Muslim women do not behave this way, because their lives are guided by their sincere fear and respect of Allah. They never worry about pleasing anyone for some small material gain, for Allah and many other people despise such behavior. Rather, they seek to behave in a way that will win them His good pleasure. They also know that Allah likes only those who are sincere, for "He knows what the heart contains" (Surat ash-Shura: 24). In another verse, Allah says: "Though you speak out loud, He knows your secrets and what is even more concealed" (Surah Ta-Ha: 7). For this reason, only unbelievers seek to conceal from others what is really in their hearts.

Besides, Muslim women know that winning people's pleasure will not benefit them in either world, for Allah has revealed that He will not forgive anyone who ascribes partners to Him. Therefore, all believers must refrain from such behavior, for seeking to win other people's approval is just one of the many ways of ascribing partners to Allah.

Muslim Women Are Honest Allah reminds people not to lie:

O You who believe! Have fear [and respect] of Allah and speak the right word. He will put your actions right for you and forgive you your wrong deeds. (Surat al-Ahzab: 70-71)

... Have done with the defilement of idols and with telling lies. (Surat al-Hajj: 30)

He also reveals that turning the truth upside down and lying brings evil and Satan's friendship:

Shall I tell you upon whom the demons descend? They descend on every evil liar. They give them a hearing, and most of them are liars. (Surat ash-Shu'ara': 221-223)

As Allah reveals with "Cursed be the liars" (Surat adh-Dhariyat: 10), Muslim women know that Allah disapproves of lying and so refrain from it. Aware that all of their words will confront them in the Hereafter, believing women speak only words of goodness, which will be rewarded with Allah's grace and mercy.

Lies, which will bring great loss in the Hereafter, bring no benefit in this world either. As they always lead to psychological and material loss, hypocritical and insincere people reflect their true nature on their faces. Admitting to themselves that they are dishonest and insincere, they lose their self-respect and the respect for those whom they deceive. Nevertheless, they believe that others do not perceive their insincerity and so develop a superiority complex toward them. But such behavior leads to a major difficulty: One is forced to develop more and more elaborate lies to conceal the truth, and therefore lives with the constant fear of being exposed. Allah will expose their insincerity and lies either in this world or the next.

On the other hand, telling the truth is superior and dignifying. Allah reveals the difference between good words and corrupt words in the following example:

Do you not see how Allah makes a metaphor of a good word: a good tree whose roots are firm and whose branches are in heaven? It bears fruit regularly by its Lord's permission. Allah makes metaphors for people so that, hopefully, they will pay heed. The metaphor of a corrupt word is that of a rotten tree, uprooted on Earth's surface. It has no staying-power. Allah makes those who believe firm with the Firm Word in the life of this world and the Hereafter. But Allah misguides the wrongdoers. Allah does whatever He wills. (Surah Ibrahim: 24-27)

Aware of the goodness and prosperity inherent in truth and honesty, Muslim women never compromise in such matters, regardless of the consequences to themselves or others. With courage and openness, they speak the truth at all times. Allah reveals this character trait:

O you who believe! Be upholders of justice, bearing witness for Allah alone, even against yourselves or your parents and relatives. Whether they are rich or poor, Allah is well able to look after them. Do not follow your own desires and deviate from the truth. If you twist or turn away, Allah is aware of what you do. (Surat an-Nisa': 135)

Allah also reminds people not to sacrifice truth and honesty in moments of anger:

O you who believe! Show integrity for the sake of Allah, bearing witness with justice. Do not let hatred for a people incite you into not being just. Be just. That is closer to heedfulness. Have fear of Allah. Allah is aware of what you do. (Surat al-Ma'ida: 8)

In unbelieving societies, many women lie to their family members, spouses, children, siblings, or friends. They have an excuse for each of these lies: some lies are harmless, it is alright to lie in order to benefit someone, or white lies do not count. For instance, they believe that there is nothing wrong with lying about where they have been, whom they have been with, or on what they have spent their money. Such things, they claim, are little harmless lies common in every marriage.

In reality, none of these excuses is valid, since Allah has forbidden lies. Moreover, lying is a characteristic of Satan. As we know, Satan resorted to lies in order to get Prophet Adam (as) and his wife expelled from Paradise.

Muslim women know the final destination of liars, for their guiding principles are the Qur'an and our Prophet's (saas) sunnah. Therefore, they refrain from this activity and strive to remain honest, because following the truth at all times will bring goodness and respect. Our Prophet (saas) told the believers that:

"Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person."25

Muslim Women Are Brave

A common stereotype, often held by unbelieving men, is that women do not have the necessary patience and maturity to deal with certain stressful situations. In fact, they believe that women actually make matters worse and become liabilities. There is an element of truth in this claim. Whereas men tend to remain cool even in very dangerous situations and just deal with it courageously, unbelieving women often surrender to fear and panic, thereby escalating the situation and making it even more difficult for themselves. For this reason, men are often forced to calm their women down while trying to resolve the situation.

Such a situation is inconceivable for Muslim women, for their love, trust, dedication, and submission to Allah help them develop a strong, courageous, and brave personality. They know that Allah will test them with hardship and that those who remain firm in their submission and dedication to Him will be rewarded with His mercy. This makes them even more determined, as Allah reveals below:

Many a Prophet has been killed, when there were many thousands with him. They did not give up in the face of what assailed them in the Way of Allah, nor did they weaken, nor did they yield. Allah loves the steadfast. (Surah Al 'Imran: 146)

Those who, when disaster strikes them, say: "We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return." (Surat al-Baqara: 156)

Those to whom people said: "The people have gathered against you, so fear them." But that merely increased their faith, and they said: "Allah is enough for us and the Best of Guardians." (Surah Al 'Imran: 173)

This bravery is based on their lack of concern for their worldly life, for they know that their submission and trust in Allah will be rewarded in the best possible way. Allah gave life and will take it back again, just as He gave everything else (e.g., health, youth, and property) and will take it all back again. Aware of this truth, and that Allah creates everything according to His wisdom and goodness, they maintain their peace of mind. As a result, believing women never lose heart in the face of danger, hardship, or personal risk.

Furthermore, their courage is reflected in their determination to observe the limits that Allah has imposed upon humanity. Whatever the situation, they do not make compromises with the Qur'an's morality or fear or respect any thing or being other than Allah. Allah reveals this quality in the verse given below:

… those who conveyed Allah's Message and had fear [and respect] of Him, fearing [and respecting] no one except Allah. Allah suffices as a Reckoner. (Surat al-Ahzab: 39)

Muslim Women Refrain from Empty Words and Deeds

Allah defines the believers as "those who turn away from worthless talk" (Surat al-Mu'minun: 3) and "those who do not bear false witness and who, when they pass by worthless talk, pass by with dignity" (Surat al-Furqan: 72). In other words, Muslims who come face to face with such situations do not compromise on their dignity and honor and do not behave in an un-Islamic manner.

Passing time in such ways is common among unbelieving women. As we mentioned above, women who have not acquired great ideals are characterized by certain types of behavior. Some are of benefit to their families, their environment, and themselves, while others are just habits designed to pass time. Some of the best known of these are socializing with friends on certain days, spending the whole day watching television programs of no particular value, spending hours on the phone, complaining about anything and everything, gossiping, and discussing other people's shortcomings. The common denominator of all these activities is that they benefit no one.

Allah reveals that such people's hearts are drawn toward the things of this world:

Their hearts are distracted. (Surat al-Anbiya': 3)

Muslim women avoid such useless activities, since they are well aware that Allah has granted people only a limited amount of time. Knowing that they must use this time to win Allah's good pleasure, mercy, and His Paradise, they live every moment of their lives accordingly. Not willing to waste even one moment with pointless activities or small talk, which they will regret in the Hereafter, they strive to do good deeds. As He reveals, they are engaged in a constant race to win His good pleasure: "They believe in Allah and the Last Day, enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and compete in doing good. They are among the believers." (Surah Al 'Imran: 114)

Muslim Women Are Chaste and Honorable

Wealth and sons are the embellishment of the life of this world. But, in your Lord's sight, right actions that are lasting bring a better reward and are a better basis for hope. (Surat al-Kahf: 46)

Through this verse, Allah reveals an important fact to people: Those things that are so important for some and to which they dedicate their entire lives to obtaining, are only the temporary pleasures of this life. The only true and lasting values are the spiritual values and their firm establishment in a person's life. But people who disregard this reality chase wealth, status, and property due to their misguided belief that these will bring them honor, respect, and true values. Likewise, they measure others with these values and, according to their material wealth, decide whether to respect, like, and admire them or not.

In reality, Allah gives all of these things as gifts for the people to use. But the qualities that bring distinction and worth in His presence as well as here on Earth, such as honor, chastity, and integrity, are very different. These qualities, along with the Muslims' fear and respect of Allah, give purpose and value to their life and win them other people's sincere respect and love. Even the richest, most beautiful or powerful person cannot have the same degree of superiority and exalted nature as a chaste, honorable, and virtuous person. A person of such qualities has a natural radiance, beauty, and depth of soul.

Allah reveals that He honors those who make a genuine effort to live by the Qur'an's morality and fear and respect Him, as is His due: "If you avoid the serious wrong actions you have been forbidden, We will erase your bad actions and admit you by a Gate of Honor" (Surat an-Nisa': 31) and that:

The men and women who give charity and make a good loan to Allah will have it increased for them, and they will have a generous reward. (Surat al-Hadid: 18)

People's true honor is revealed by their refusal to become base when with base people, to seek little gains by little frauds, to behave like unbelievers, lie, and become a hypocrite. In other words, they respond to all people with the same maturity and good character. Muslim women display honor and integrity by behaving in accordance with their complete fear and respect of Allah, as well as their total belief in and submission to Him. They never compromise over such issues, for they know that doing so will displease Him and put them on the same level as unbelievers.

In many verses, Allah mentions the importance of chastity and how it benefits women. He reveals that Maryam's character and chastity is an example for all women, regardless of time or location, and reminds them of their ensuing superiority:

And when the angels said: "Maryam, Allah has chosen you and purified you. He has chosen you over all other women." (Surah Al 'Imran: 42)

In other verses, Allah reminds people that chastity is an important and defining characteristic of Muslim women:

If any of you do not have the means to marry free women who are believers, you may marry slave girls who are believers. Allah knows best about your faith; you are all the same in that respect. Marry them with their owners' permission and give them their dowries correctly and courteously as married women, not in fornication or taking them as lovers. (Surat an-Nisa': 25)

... so are chaste women from among the believers and chaste women of those given the Book before you, once you have given them their dowries in marriage, not in fornication or taking them as lovers. But as for anyone who rejects faith, his actions will come to nothing, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers. (Surat al-Ma'ida: 5)

Chastity brings honor and respect to women and prevents their being made to suffer in society. In another verse, Allah states that "this makes it more likely that they will be recognized and not be harmed" (Surat al-Ahzab: 59).

Muslim women acquire honor, integrity, and respect by adhering to the limits that Allah has established for humanity. A person's virtuous and chaste nature can be determined from his or her behavior, conversation, movements, facial expressions, and even from a smile. A chaste woman has a natural aura of well-being, a radiant personality, and a trustworthy character. As Allah reveals, Muslims are recognized by these qualities. In fact, "their mark is on their faces, the traces of prostration..." (Surat al-Fath: 29)
